There was a lot of talk about this in 2012 and I think from the production sales numbers it's obvious there was some sort of agreement (I suppose you could look at the worldwide sales number and assume that the agreement falls in line with that). I also think it may vary by region.

I recall a quote from James May where he said the ratio in GB was 9 to 1, but no one ever confirmed that. Here is one article that could not get a straight answer.

What I meant was that the split probably had nothing to do with competing with each other or giving Toyota a higher income but more along the lines of Subaru just wanted to sell fewer in the first place. Of course there was an agreement on how many of each were built since I doubt they stood at the end of the assembly line and flipped a coin.

You say that but it's important in recent years there have been many consumer complaints it get car manufacturers to re think things even in this segment of 18-25k-30k dollar cars

Some examples are Hyundai making their interior better after years of stink

Honda in 2012 released the civic to back lash of bad materials, they pulled back and came out with a newer one after just a year and a half with a better interior.
The current 2016 Civic benchmarks an A3 and is North American car of the year a lot for great designs etc and a nice interior. With except ofmshitty touch volume thing,

Ford when the new Mustang came out made a much better interior, and is praised for it

Chevy and the new Camero is another example.

Every New Kodo Mazda has a good interior and is praised for it.

Might not seem like a big deal to some of us enthusiast but interior is important

Hell a lot of people chose a BRZ over the FRS for better interior!

So usually I agree but I have to disagree this time.

From seeing comments here I definitely believe a nicer interior is a selling point. I personally don't care if everything it's plastic. I expect it. It's practical to produce. Would I like brushed aluminum inserts? Sure. But not for another couple grand. I don't like leather seats(never had alcantara but I don't see how it's better than fabric). Some gadgets I like, like Bluetooth or a subwoofer. Others like navigation aren't important because I'll just use my phone anyways

That's actually been part of my decision making process, and I'm ONLY shopping Premiums. I like the premium seats better than the FR-S, and the Tachometer better.

The speaker surround panels and radio bezel pieces can be bought separately (I find it odd the Premium STILL doesn't get those pieces).

At the same time, it just shows how close the two are together. I'm literally looking at the Tachometer and going "I might buy this one because I like how it looks."

And I'm still cross shopping because I really like what Subaru did with the interior for the refresh....and of all the colors this car is offered in, WRB is my favorite. The desire to own a Toyota 86 though is very strong, cause...fanboy. Not a fan of Lapis Blue though....sigh, why did they get rid of Galaxy Blue?

I believe the new cars BRZ and 86 have Car play and Android Auto, so you can just sync and leave your phone to charge and use the nav on the dash as for Alcantara, it's mostly doesn't have the bad qualities of leather where it cracks, but gives a more premium feel. Lower trim BRZ have fabric seats, and 86 seats are partial Alcantara partial Fabric. Toyota prolly still placed a better sound system inside the car just like the FRS (one of the few things I liked about scion is try Gabe you a good sound system)

This is why I kinda like the direction Hyundai went for a while they offered a racing no extra stuff trim that if you didn't care you would save money. And then have a top trim and a mid trim. For our twin we basically have Mono 86 and two BRZ trims the lower one overlapping with the 86. Even thought in Japan for example you can buy a no frills one for less and there's 4 trims.

This might change in the future but we will see!

Having a nice interior and good functions for the price is the best way to be competitive these days!at least from the American perspective.

To be honest, I think the most important factor of the FR-S being a Scion is the ability it gave them to test it in the North American market. If the car was considered to be a failure, they could just stop producing it, and never release the GT86 here.

And to say that the FR-S was a failure or a bad decision? The fact that it basically proof of concepted the car in the NA market and enabled them to bring the GT86 here now that Scion is soon to being dead and over... that's success right there.

I see a ton of FR-S and BRZs where I live. Bay Area, California. In my opinion, the car is a great success. The best part about it? In five to eight years, the Scion FR-S will be the rare version that no one can find with less than 50,000 miles on it for a decent price. That's why I know so many owners who are keeping their cars in near-mint condition.

Also the price bottomed out at a very respectable value. You won't find a single brand new 2013/2014 Scion FR-S at any dealership where I live. They sold them all.
