The past 10 cars that I've bought all had the same symptom shifting from first to second when cold. There's nothing that can really be done about it.

Both my 06, and now 09 tC do the same thing when it's cold -- have to be careful with 2nd when it's cold.

I also have this issue, but it is getting better as I approach 2000 miles. Double clutching and with rev matching can help. However, I've found that just being quick with the 1->2 shift so the revs don't drop in the first place is just as good if not better than trying to be slow and careful.

It was also brought up on the Scion side: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8437

Glad to hear I'm not the only one noticing this.

Yep almost every manual car I have had displays similar symptoms when cold (especially in winter.) My WRX trans darn notchy to begin with. Nothing to fret about, double clutch it if your that worried.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this, I felt sure this was going to be a warranty fix. I did notice though that even as its warmed up, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd, never gets completely smooth, as in I still feel a slight "clack" vs. and more quiet "slotting-in" as with 3rd and above. I've had this same problem in my old 98 Civic but a transmission oil change fixed it right up and made it all buttery smooth. Hopefully its the same in this case.

My 944 and 944 Turbo did that too. It took a lot of force to get from 1st to 2nd when the trans was cold.

This is pretty typical for all cars with triple cone synchros in first and second. Subaru tends to use a thinner fluid to help with quick warm up, but its still pretty thick when cold. Just take your time and don't force it.

So, to begin, the issues are NOT normal and need to be fixed. The technicians fixed some valves, readjusted cam angles etc.. but I will get the full repair specs Monday. They are also tracking my car tomorrow and Sunday to get full engine read outs for future FR-S owners. So as of Monday any of you experiencing this problem will have a fix, and a quick one at that.

I have not had my car for a month now because of this but I can tell you that as long as I know that future owners will not experience these problems it was well worth it. Good luck to everyone who has had this issue and if you are still experiencing this please take your cars to the dealership over the next month and your problems should be addressed a lot sooner than mine!

I was going to make a post about this myself. I have noticed the same thing. It's hard to get out of first, and into second, almost all of the time. Sometimes, it may be easier when I try to change gears while at higher rpms, and while accelerating.

The other option is to double-clutch it. If you try to pull out of first gear and it doesn't want to budge so smoothly (and you don't want to yank it), try easing off the gas (so don't get all jerky) and releasing the clutch completely. Then re-engage the clutch (and gas, if necessary) and, I've found, a lot of times it will work smoothly.

I thought/hoped this problem was exclusive to Hondas I was hoping to have something nice and smooth. The transmission seems no better than my RSX type-s with 100K miles.
