I got a Western Digital external USB 3.0 2tb. I can't recall the price but it was on sale and they usually do come on sale often. I currently have it connected to my wireless router acting as a nas.

Just check dealnews.com for a deal. If you were closer, I'd sell you a used drive. The thought of a 2TB drive is so quaint.

I had two seagates, bought at the same time, used in the same machine (main data/programs drive and backup) die within two months period.

damn that sucks and unlucky

OP can always go with Western Digital but it seems like Hitachi is the most reliable

This is why I always have a backup drive. Every drive may fail, and in my case, because of the backup, instead of suffering major disaster, I just took out the dead drive, swapped the cables, and kept going (while ordering replacement).

I also dont't recommend RAID or automatic syncing of backups. My friend deleted a lot of important files by mistake and before he noticed, it propagated to all his automatically synced backups.

I use a syncing program that I periodically run manually and always look at the sync list to ensure I am not doing any damage.
