This is how I understood it but he will not give me the locked file. Do I need that to start a new tune?

So basically you cannot read out the contents of an ecu with ecutek if its already been tuned and has ecutek features added.

Your tuner should send you a locked copy of your tune licienced to your ecutek dongle id so you can flash it your self. That you should be entitled to get, but you will not be able to modify or look at the tune just flash it.

Their is two "liciences" with ecutek.

you need an ecu flash licience, this is initially assigned to a ecutek dongle id, then its permanently transferred to your ecu to allow you to flash with the ecutek system.

Once this licence is in ecu then any ecutek brz/86 cable/dongle kit can flash thet ecu with embedded licience. No licience in ecu means no flash with ecutek.

Tunes are then licienced to a particular dongle id to protect tuner and so you cannot share tunes. Tunes are also in most cases locked by tuner.

However your tuner should send you a locked copy of your tune, but licienced to your dongle id so only you can flash it, but you wont be able to look at tune parameters or edit it.

Unfortunatly as I said before is not possible for you to read out your tune from ecu.

ohh, and buying the extra "racerom" extension addon only allows you to edit more racerom features it does not "unlock" tunes

So your tuner has told you to reflash with an off the shelf tune instead of using your custom tune that you've paid for to get data logs? Essentially telling you to go drink piss water?

If so I'd say to go ahead and point this asshole out so anyone who reads this knows who to stay away from. Maybe someone on here knows him and could reach out to this tuner on your behalf and talk some sense into him.

well if they wont give you tune locked tune file thats pretty poor.

Im not sure of the legal position but that sucks and gives ecutek tuners a bad name.

I wonder if they guy does not understand how ecutek works, and that the tune would be locked, flash only and also locked to your dongle only.

if thats the case then yes you will need to start from scratch, or most likely get another tuner to tune it, make sure they will give you locked tune file so you can reflash yourself if needed.

most reputable ecutek tuners like mot-east or delicious send customers the locked tune file to flash.

A excellent tune cost 300 bucks USD. I suggest buying a tune from a reputable tuner like Delicious Tuning. Its not worth the stress....
300 bucks to be stress free worry free is a bargain.....

That's not quite the case. I want to take my business to another custom tuner because of poor customer service.

For the data logging portion only, all you need is a tune file with the correct ECU identification (stock tune works) and you can pull the data.

I was wondering about the IP stuff. Like it is his original work, but I paid to get it done, but it was put on my ECU, but I don't have access to a back-up. I don't see a clear answer in here...

I got confirmation from EcuTek that a new tuner can start from scratch and rewrite over the existing. Just really sucks that I can't get the file to revert back if there is issues.

I think his lack of understanding is what it holding him back. He does tune Nissan, Subaru, Honda, Mitsubishi and GM cars, so I assumed he would know how EcuTek works. I think primarily he works with Cobb though.

With the turbo and meth injection and supporting mods I feel much better getting a proper dyno tune done just because you can really get a more dialed in custom solution.

Plus this is a time attack car so I want to squeeze out as much as I can while still being reliable.

I believe you can download the tune in your ECU and have it as a backup? Not entirely sure but I think you can download the tune from your ECU (which will be locked to your dongle, ECU, etc.. but still you'd have the backup file in your computer).

Any idea how I do that? I came form OFT (super user friendly) and EcuTek is a lot more difficult to sort out in the user interface.

When I was N/A and doing remote tuning with Delicious Tuning I thought the same thing "I have to put it on a dyno". So I drove 700 miles loaded the car on dyno tuned for 3 hrs and picked up 2hp... That is a testament of how close I was dialed in.. I just put my car on the dyno again and pushed 710whp with my new F/I engine using ECUTEK. Everyone said you need a stand alone to hit high hp and again Delicious Tuning made it happen... I swear by Delicious Tuning those guys are like family to me.
So I guess in the end it all boils down to what makes you comfortable and that's cool but I just wanted to explain just how solid the tunes are from Delicious Tuning. So there you have it from someone who has done it. lol Good luck keep me posted.....

P.S. I do drag racing and was able to hit 13.47 N/A full interior all by remote tuning.....

I believe it's in the programming menu where you can query the ECU, I believe one of the options there is to download the tune.

ill give it a go but I have a suspicion that its for stock roms only, I suspect if ecutek sees an embedded licience or ecutek seed key encoding on ecu it wont read it but we will see.

I actually tried right now, I have an unlocked tune but regardless, I didn't see any options to download the tune.

Closest thing I saw was "dump details for Ecutek" but that seemed like something that would create a log, not download the tune file.
