I personally will not be using K&N anymore. I used them for years in various vehicles and have since abandoned them. They are made of cotton and eventually shrink over time. At least mine did... Once it shrinks, it no longer protects. They were designed mostly for racing applications where long term reliability is not a concern. They load up faster than some other filters, reducing long term air flow and don't filter as well which lets dust into the engine. I also have some concern over an oiled filter being placed ahead of my sensitive MAF sensor. Oil contamination attracts dust. That's why these filters work, at first... But these oil droplets also get pulled into your intake and over time may accumulate dirt on your MAF.
Here's an article I read that explains some of the differences between filters. http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html Accumulative Gain: “Accumulative Gain” is the total amount of dirt that passed through the filter during the test. ![]() The only thing that passed more dirt was a foam filter. If I were going to go with an aftermarket filter, I would stay away from oiled cotton and go with an oil free synthetic media such as a Cosworth filter. |

Depends how much oil you put after cleaning it. If it really caused major problems TRD would have gone with a dry filter. And a TRD filler is a rebadged K&N one.

But TRD might be also a bit more track focused, and they also provide full intake kit with much bigger airbox, which very probably may provide less airflow resistance even with normal filtering due larger filter area? Though costs are on high side vs drop-in filter and hardly justify gains.

I got my green filter today and installed it. I have to say the filter I removed was pretty nice. I can's say I've seen one quite like it before except maybe a cabin air filter. The pleats are fuzzy and very deep, lots of surface area. It's the OEM filter marked as a Toyota part. The pleats stick out pretty far on both sides. Here are some photos compared to the green filter. If anyone has a photo of a K&N filter I'd like to see it. I'm wondering which way the pleats go. Parallel to the ground or perpendicular like the green and OEM filter. In any case here are some photos. The green filter fit fine with no issues. I'll give it a go and see how I like it.
Note OEM filter has ~4,650 miles on it.

I went with K & N simply because Wal-Mart had it for sale and I wanted to get rid off the coffee filter. More responsiveness combined with my exhaust

That green filter looks like exactly like the K&N.
I also went with a K&N cause Walmart cheap.

My k&n was a pita as far as fitment goes and once the ecu eventually corrects the afr power gains will be immeasurable. From my experience the tune is everything. Header and tune, unless of course you figure a way to cut 300 lbs from the car. My current set up is oft and power blocks. With proper temperature, barometric pressure and planetary alignment it feels adequate.
