Don't change your oil right after you just drove it. I've never "torqued" my drain plug. It's common sense to know it can't be loose and you can't crank on it. I feel like this part is over simplifying an already simple task. It's convenient, yes, but it's also risky. See OP.

i have the short nipple version and it does not stick out of the skid plat.

it even says on the fumoto site not to get the normal nipple for cars with low clearance.

I have the short nipple FU and it comfortable clears inside the alloy plate but must always be careful. As others have suggested you will hit the front nose cone first before anything else

Have had my Fumoto valve on since my first oil change (3+ years). No nipple version. Seems like it's well protected under the car.

No issues whatsoever and I took the car off road, on track. Damaged the front bumper once (off-road due to hitting a bump), no issues with the valve whatsoever. Still looks like new.

The valve will not "leak" oil, it's not that easy to open. If you hit something hard enough or hear a loud bang you should stop and check it out anyway. Regardless of what modifications you have it is just common sense.

I'm not disputing that many are running this with no issue, but I felt it would be remiss of me not to detail my own experience here. Your skid plate can and will flex given the right conditions. Your Fumoto doesn't flex with it. If you must have the nipple, run a shorty.
Actually, the shorty comes with a detachable nipple. I would use it if I hadn't lost it.

And yes, to call that bottom cover a skid plate is misleading. It's there just for aero. Not structural at all. Does look nice though and really helps keep everything clean underneath.

Go on a hard drive both with and without it, then come back and tell me it is not structural.

Exactly, they'd have used plastic for a structurally insignificant part especially considering how much attention was paid to making the car light weight.

Mmmm... I dunno about that. It gets super hot down there. Either way, it's a nice part. Not exactly a full blown skid plate but it's nice.

They'd have used thermal shield and plastic. I've seen it done on enough motorcycles to know that heat is a non issue on plastics with the proper insulation.

Yeah, good point. That stuff is really effective. Hell, I dunno.

for what it's worth, there's this plastic piece on both sides of the header with thermal tape on the inside. it connects to the skid plate with the push lock buttons. it sits REALLY close to the header and when I installed my headers I was wondering if it would melt... but nope it is in perfectly fine condition. I guess thermal tape works wonders

It really does. Decay107 has a special talent for getting me to question my understanding.

dammit

If you hit the skid plate hard enough to deform it and then hit a no-nipple valve, chances are you were going to mess something up anyway.
I agree with this, I just installed mine few weeks back and there is plenty of clearance. Sounds like the car bounced enough to hit the valve on its way back down. Just one out of many failures seems to be driver error not product error.
