The power gain was by drag reduction via engine internals. They also changed the Findal Drive Ratio to 4.31 from 4.1, which either had a middling effect with the automatic transmission or they really didn't want to bother reprogramming it.

The Final Drive is the last effective "gear" that a car will use to amplify torque or speed. Automatic transmissions have their TC (Torque Converter), which amplifies torque significantly on their own, so it would be redundant or detrimental to adjust the final value when you can't change the TC.
It's usually why manufacturers like Honda have high ratios such (+4.2:1 and on), because most are torque based and automatic, which further increases torque, so they just need to have a higher output speed. Edit: In a horrific amount of hindsight, I've realized that Subaru messed up their wording and what they meant to say was that they reduced the ratio to 4.1 from 4.31. Which improves wheel torque. The final drive ratio is another name for the ring and pinion in the differential. Changing the ring and pinion is already a well-known and very effective mod for automatics, but I think they go the other direction with it. In this case, they're changing to diff for one with a 4.10:1 ratio. This will make for quicker acceleration, but it also means higher cruising rpm.

If you look at the press release for the 2017 BRZ, they said they changed the intake, camshaft and exhaust manifold. I'm guessing they only change that in the manual version in an effort not to increase the price of the automatic which is already higher than the manual. I'm pretty sure both transmissions option will now be the same price (higher than 2016).

Or maybe even the 8 speed sport direct shift from the GS-F and RC-F we'll see in 2nd generation.

DSG wouldn't be as reliable or smooth as a traditional planetary gear auto. VW double clutch gearbox as unreliable as it is, actually operates smoother than the ones from Ford or BMW.
I think the base model twins had a 3.9 final drive in Japan, 4.1 with the higher trim and we got that stock. I guess the stiffer rear subframe and chassis would allow for a 4.3 final drive to put down that slightly better power. I wonder what would be the cruising rpm on the highway. |
