Differences between BRZ/FRS Stereos

Hi everyone,

I got my car last week and so far my biggest gripe is the factory stereo.

While doing some research for a new headunit I got to thinking.....What are the differences between the factory BRZ/FRS stereo systems?

I know the headunits are not the same, but is there another hard part that is different which accounts for the 120w difference in power?

I'm assuming the FRS has an additional or more powerful amp which is not present in the BRZ....is that correct?

I did some research and wasn't able to find a definitive answer.

both US spec cars have an amp in the rear for the door speakers. I thought the BRZs HU was generally more featured.. this Q is difficult to answer as different model years have had different units. TBH IMO if you're going to change the unit, just go aftermarket, its super easy in these cars.

I may go with an aftermarket unit and am already researching a few, but I still want to figure out what the differences between the two systems are.

Does the FRS have a larger/more powerful amp?

Negative. Amps are the same for both "twins". Its the head unit. I'm not sure at the current model year, but prior base head unit and "premium" Bespoke units in FRS were both Pioneer, where BRZ came with Fujitsu ten Units (aka watered down eclipse AVN827). Pioneer units are more powerful and base FRS unit comes with RCA out for Sub, while BRZ units didn't have anything as such.

Thanks for confirming!

So, i guess the next question would be is it possible to swap out an FRS touchscreen headunit for the one into a BRZ?

I've looked at a lot of different aftermarket units lately and while I may wind up getting one of them, i wouldn't mind sticking with a more OE look and having physical buttons.

Correct, it's Plug`n`Play swap.
