Cannot Put Her Into First Gear

What OP described sounds normal for our cars at this point. I'd change your transmission fluid to something better though, all my shifting qualms basically went away immediately when I switched to motul at 22,000 miles. Now I'm at about 55,000 and about to change it again.

Subaru suggests 30,000 miles I believe, Toyota says something weird like 22,500 or something (I'm not sure if Scion is also weird that way): but it should be in your owners manual.
