Do you have a bicycling background at all?
If you have a year to work on it, get on a bicycle with hand brakes and gears.
Swap the front brake over to the right hand. That's where all MC front brakes are.
Get used to braking and control situations on varying surfaces. Gravel. Wet grass.
Note potentially deadly traffic issues on the road.

Directly useful experience.
You are invisible. Act like it.

Yeah, definitely.
There's some nice roads out where I'm at if you're ever in the North Plains area.

It's been raining like the world is about to end for the last week, and I haven't been able to ride. I'm going into withdrawal.

I got caught in a total downpour a few weeks ago leaving work.
I was not prepared... I had puddles in my boots...

How many do you have?

I've been thinking of picking up a bigger bike.
Maybe an SV650. Looked at a couple RC390s as well. Hard to find a used one though and I don't really want to pay new money for one.

This makes five. The SV, the DR-Z, two old Honda scoots, and now the Thunderbird Sport.

Sv is a solid choice for a medium fast bike. To me at least, ~70hp is the Goldilocks zone for power. Powerful enough to get out of it's own way and outpace nearly any car but forgiving enough that it can be ridden like a total hooligan bike without too much risk of biting the rider. The supermoto is still way more fun in the tight twisties but for faster riding you have to constantly wring every bit of power out of that little motor. I'd offer to let you have a go on the SV but it's pretty far from a stock example and wouldn't really be representative.

Yeah, that's how my current bike is (basically BRZ in bike form) and I don't mind it. Just want something with a bit more power.

Well if you really feel like the Ninja is lacking, it's not going to be much better on the RC. I mean it's about 25% more power but overall it's pretty similar. I love those bikes, but in more of a supermoto alternative type of way.
