Happens all the time. This is why some threads on this forum become so long that even my browser gets confused.

When getting I the freeway, is it better to accelerate as slowly as possible or get up to speed and engage cruise control as soon as possible? Or somewhere in the middle? If there's no traffic sometimes I'll accelerate as slow as 1mph/second

Are you trying to maximize your mileage?

To be honest, I would have bought a different car if mileage was such a concern. I do, however, offer my own anecdote:

I have mixed moments of aggression, as well as being very grandfatherly. I lean more towards the first method, where you're on it hard and cruising quickly. Because the second method is so gradual, any hills you encounter will drop your mileage to the point where you're in the wrong gear. Then you have to downshift, and it's just ugly from there.

My opinion, the best way to maximize mileage out of any car is to get a job where you drive mostly on the highway during non-rush hour times.

Stock, I got this car up to 35 mpg. With coils and 245/40/17s, I am getting 34.3 mpg. No "power mods."

I had a 91MR2T with 120k+ miles that I got roughly 30 mpg (gas pump calculated), and 2007 Impreza that I got roughly 29 mpg. Pretty sure both cars were factory rated at 20 city 27 highway.

30+ easily on the highway but lately most of my miles have been with at least one bike on a hitch rack, sometimes two. It's amazing what a difference it makes. I can do the same exact drive with and without and it's at least 4-5 mpg different. I've never had a car where the spread is so large.

That has to be one of the highest MPG's I've seen. I'm happy to see 20 on E85. I can understand driving for MPG, but why would you want all the time with this car? I'm not a passive driver. I want the idiots behind me, and that's just about everyone.

I've seen 41 MPG on the highway at 100 km/h on the stock tires.

I've seen high numbers on the MPG display, too, but that has nothing to do with real MPG. Did you get an average 41 MPG out of a tank of gas? If so, you are the new champ. How the heck did you do that?

Definitely not average out of the tank. Just from a 2 hour trip between cities reset at the fuel pump.

Not far off Fuelly in my experience. Higher ethanol blends can hurt your mileage though.

Calculated 30 MPG despite the 245/40 summer tires. Didn't expect that.

Haseebali31, the gas mileage claims on this car are misleading. To get the good gas mileage, you need to do a lot of highway cruising in 6th gear at 3000-3500 RPM. If your driving is mostly in the city, your mileage is not going to be as good.

The car holds 12.5 usable gallons of fuel, and the light comes on when you have 2.4 gallons left. That means you're running about 230 miles on 10.1 gallons of fuel. That comes out to about 22.8 MPG. That mileage really isn't all that bad if you're driving in the city, especially if you spend a larger portion of your driving time above 4000 RPM.

Keep in mind that this car has two sets of injectors. The direct injectors kick in around 4000 RPM. If you normally drive like a Q-tip and shift before you get to 4000 RPM, you use less fuel. Of course, that makes driving this car pretty dull.

Other considerations: This car is somewhat fuel sensitive, and fuel brand can make a difference. If you're fueling up at the same place every time, you might try switching brands and see if your mileage improves. The stock tires are also low rolling resistance. If you have swapped to grippier tires or have an alignment problem, that can be reflected in the MPG.
Thanks bro! I appreciate the advice. Ill try and fill up somewhere else but honestly I mostly drive city and the extra few miles I get from driving like I've been neutered isn't really worth it. Might as well have some fun, right?

I also was wondering how many gallons are left in my tank when the light comes on but you already answered that! Thanks again!
