Gas Mileage
 

I have filled my tank up to the brim maybe 5 times now and I have noticed that I only get 230 miles to the tank before the gas light comes on. I am guessing its because I'm not shifting at a low enough RPM? Or because I don't use 6th gear when driving 45 mph.

So... few questions for you experts out there.

When should I shift gears for maximum MPG?
and
Can I use 6th gear on normal(service) roads?

Yeah, that is pretty bad mileage. Turn your shift light on. And shift when it tells you to. That will get you the best gas mileage. It tells you somewhere in the manual how to turn on the gear indicator and shift light.

And I get my best mileage at 45 mph in 6th gear @ about 2,000 RPM. 38 MPG!

You can also use the DISP button to cycle through different info to display. There is one for average gas mileage which you can reset by holding down DISP.

Car has two shift mode indicators.one for economy and one for performance. Performance you set yourself which uses a light to tell you to shift. Economy is preset and wants to shift low rpms. Don't know what I get in a tank but I only get around 28mpg. Doubt I get 300 miles

If you do a lot of stop and stop driving or lay on the pedal a lot your mileage will suck.


I played with the econo shift lights for a week once (sort of like playing Shift Hero) and although I did get better mileage it was the most boring driving of my life. Dom would not have approved of my granny shifting at all.

21 mpg here...in an auto. Either I drive like a nutball or maybe I just don't travel far or long enough to get the good 30+mpg.

The local geography can also play a role, but yeah, upshift at lower speeds. If I'm tooling around town and don't have to be anywhere particularly quickly I skip-shift:

From a stop - 1-2 almost immediately, 2-4 at 20mph, 4-6 at 39

Slow rolling (it helps to time lights when you can and not come to a complete stop)- 2-3 at 15mph, 3-5 at 30 and then 6 at 39mph.

I've found those speeds seem to match up pretty well with the the economy shift light (and this is on nearly level roads btw). It's dull, but I figure it helps offset the occasional "Italian tune-up" run or AutoX day (or just general desire to accelerate faster).

If I adhere to that shift schedule pretty closely I usually manage to stay right at the 29 - 30 mpg mark. With gas being cheaper these days, I don't worry about it so much though and average 27.

Cruise control at 50 mph in 3rd gear at 4k+ rpm with no interruptions will get better fuel economy than bumper to bumper stop and go city/commute traffic with you short shifting never revving past 2k rpm under 25 mph.

Your driving conditions are the most important factor in your fuel economy.

I have literally experienced a 12 mpg tank back to back with a 30 mpg tank.

Edit: Tips, I keep the engine above 2k rpms typically, you can safely run it between 1.5k-2k rpm without issue if you don't try to accelerate out of it by putting your foot to the floor (downshift instead). I usually go to 3rd at 25 mph, 4th at 30mph, 5th at 35, 6th at 45 and I get high to mid 20's in commute traffic both city streets and freeway.

I can actually pinpoint changes in my life and to the car in this graph such as moving cities to reduce commute, girlfriend moving in, changing away from the Michelins to stickier Dunlops, track days, etc.

That thing is not even close to accurate. I wish they had just left it off so as not to confuse people.

Haseebali31, the gas mileage claims on this car are misleading. To get the good gas mileage, you need to do a lot of highway cruising in 6th gear at 3000-3500 RPM. If your driving is mostly in the city, your mileage is not going to be as good.

The car holds 12.5 usable gallons of fuel, and the light comes on when you have 2.4 gallons left. That means you're running about 230 miles on 10.1 gallons of fuel. That comes out to about 22.8 MPG. That mileage really isn't all that bad if you're driving in the city, especially if you spend a larger portion of your driving time above 4000 RPM.

Keep in mind that this car has two sets of injectors. The direct injectors kick in around 4000 RPM. If you normally drive like a Q-tip and shift before you get to 4000 RPM, you use less fuel. Of course, that makes driving this car pretty dull.

Other considerations: This car is somewhat fuel sensitive, and fuel brand can make a difference. If you're fueling up at the same place every time, you might try switching brands and see if your mileage improves. The stock tires are also low rolling resistance. If you have swapped to grippier tires or have an alignment problem, that can be reflected in the MPG.

I'm getting 27.6 mpg that's mostly highway miles. Coming from a 1998 Nissan 200SX that got about 38 mpg,I really miss those days. I filled up twice per month and could squeeze out up to 450 mile per tank,but usually got around 425 before I chickened out and filled up.


All that said,the FR-S is much more fun to drive and worth the extra cost for me.

OFT stage 1 93oct tune with buddyclub catback and a drop in filter, i would get about 27.5/28mpg with mixed city/highway... straight city i would get like 15mpg... highway i would get 40mpg.

i just flashed to stage 2 93oct tune and put tomei UEL header on last night, havent filled up nor reset my avg mpg's and its ready like 26.8mpg's..... hopefully highway this sunday for boxerfest wont be too bad!

Damn. You must drive like a nutball. My in town is like 25-26mpg with AT. You leave it in sport mode or something?

I get the same as Impureclient if not worse, I take back roads all the time and wring it out quite a bit. Traction control off, and in manual mode because sport mode does nothing in manual mode btw.

I'm supercharged and I leave it in sport mode with a manual transmission. I'm getting about 230 ish miles for about 10 or so gallons. Mostly city driving. If I'm on the highway it's above 30 miles per gallon
