No. When the FT finally comes out, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T will be due for an update, the Veloster hatch will be out (FWD I know, but cheap and 40 MPG) and the Toyota will probably be the most expensive, so it will have to be REALLY good.

The Genesis coupe is the most direct competition to the 86. Both are low $20k, both are two door coupes, both have 4-cylinder power-plants, and most importantly--both are RWD.

I don't know why they mentioned the Veloster though-interesting car nonetheless.

They will take up the same market bracket and therefore inevitably be compared. Regardless of whether it's valid. The 86 will be compared to the base Camaro and Mustang too, just because for anyone looking to buy a performance, 2 door, rwd car for around $20k, all of them will be on the same short-list.

Just saying this from a buyer & market perspective. and yes the Gen coupe does need to lose some weight.

This forum is not the general market. We are here because we are interested in what the 86 could offer, and the Genesis is missing a key component... i.e. low weight. If the 86 comes in over weight and they upgrade the Genesis' turbo 4 to the 274hp spec in the sonata, then maybe we can have this conversation again. Or perhaps not.


p.s. Interesting factoid, an FT-86 @ 2600lbs and 210hp has the same p/w as a 274hp genesis 2.0T R @ it's current curb weight (3294lbs). Leave it to Toyota to f'k up a basic formula and let the genesis eat it's food.

You got me on the forum part. I hope the Genesis gets the better turbo 4 and loses weight because I want the 86 to have some rivals--competition breeds better products from both sides.

Market. Key word here. You are thinking like a clueless marketing douchebag. No offense directly to you, but I hate those guys. It is probably their fault that you are thinking this way.

These idiots are NOT car guys. They look at RWD, and the price and automatically assume that these are the same class of car. They are NOT.

I will not be cross shopping a Mustang V6 or Genesis Turbo vs the FT86. RWD, 200ish HP, similar price. But...totally fucking different cars!

Unfortunately their marketing crap gets a lot of clueless people to look at things through their wrong-coloured glasses.

The Toyota would still rape it on the track. You're a Lotus fan, right? Colin Chapman used to point out that, all else being equal, a 100 hp 1000lbs car will be faster on a track than a 300 hp 3000lbs car. And proved it in competition. (Lotus 23)
