I'd personally be concerned but only because I know mine has been:

Lifetime: 16,306.2 Miles Driven at 32.41 MPG

as documented in the first post of my owner's journal (including details). The worst I've done was in the high 20's.

That said, its all about how you drive and how much you sit still getting zero MPG.

I usually shift at about 2200 - 2500 RPM...my average mileage is 29.7. I just know if you keep your RPM low, makes the mileage more efficiency.

Check your tire pressures. The ironic thing about these cars is that they make the best power ("normal" driving experience) around 4k-4.5k rpm, yet MPG is something that we should be worried about? Sounds like a design conflict.

In city driving, I don't even look at my MPGs. On a recent trip to Seattle and back I got 33 MPG, fyi.

After buying it, I was showing low 29s with my MT on some longish break in runs.
It had 60 miles on it, so I'm pretty sure several test rides were were on the clocks.

Then an open trunk lid overnight flatted the battery. I disconnected and charged the battery.
Immediately took off on a 2 week trip driving pretty much exactly like I had been.
Some freeway, but a lot of very technical low gear roads.
Got it up to 33.7 for a couple of days and ended up at 33.5 since the battery reset and road trip.

i pretty much average 30mpg. i accelerate pretty fast but once im up to speed i hold it. i drive 95% freeway about. i have an auto, and when i go from seattle to portland i can max it at 42mpg if i cruise at 60 with no traffic but once i hit off ramps and get into the city it drops to 36. this car has probably the best gas mileage out of any of the cars ive owned. the lancer gts is pretty close to this, also i got a tune from bob at drift office which i believe help boost it.

Depends. I average 27 to 28 in the winter and 29 to 30 when the gas formula changes for the summer, which, by my fuel mileage calculations has already occurred. I drive fairly hard when the opportunity is there, but, use manual shift mode and keep the RPMs low when in traffic to be frugal. Speaking of which, I just returned from a trip to Philly and parts north of that. Traffic was horrendous. The worst I've seen. After 4 days and and 126 miles in a Chevy Sonic LTZ rental car, that included nearly 3 hours to drive 30 miles to the Philly Amtrak station today, the Sonic returned about 20 MPG, which I think was phenomenal. I would guess that my BRZ would have returned about 15 in the same conditions, although I have no way of knowing. Seeing that, I think your results could be normal, depending on your regular drive.

Driving around town, which is a good mix of highway/city for me, lowest I've seen is 22 (that included 8 hours of autocross), normally I see 26-28.

Pure highway, going to @PSI and @PERRIN to shop, back to puyallup; last trip I got 33.5mpg, before I had put in my Perrin drop in filter.

Some of you guys get some really good gas mileage! I think it just depends on your highway/city and acceleration. I probably drive 65%-75% city so I average 25.9-26.4 mpg with 2k miles and I have not had an oil change yet. When I purchased the car and drove about 150 highway miles home, I averaged 36 mpgs.

Isn't 40mph a little low for 6th?

A smidge. I only really use 6th when going 40 when I don't need to slow down or speed up, so on long constant stretches of going 40, otherwise I use 5th or if it's between short lights 4th.
