I cut mine off [plugged] and my mpg dropped too. Temps were between 60-70F for that whole week, after driving car over 200 miles, so my ecu relearned.. Then, month later added the TRD intake and it dropped 1-2mpg. That, I can explain with the air to fuel mix ratio and temp.

People will say no, it has zero purpose and no air goes through, but yes it does. After the elbow if you turn car on and rev, you can feel the air pushing through. Then if you put your hand at the end where it connects to firewall, you can also feel it there. I've tested it.

Now concerning the main purpose of the sound tube to affect air dynamics, it is not super important for that, perhaps even insignificant, but yes it still does affect the air inside imo. The greater importance engys put it there is for sound generating.

In other words I'd say 95% sound, 3% air flow and 2{?} for mpg.

Nope not what he was inferring!

People think it is hooked up to the intake so it must have some further function. It is hooked up to the intake because that is where the noise comes from. There is not secret engineering here. Yes air moves through it, it is a tube hooked up to an intake and noise moves air. It is a big kazoo end of story.

Kazoo you say so doesn't mean that the wider audience will think it makes the car faster, slower, better, worse or just can't decide what it is or what role it plays in making the passengers think the car is pushing 200+.

That is it's sole purpose!

In this day and age I can't believe that such convoluted pipework got through the bean counters at Subaru. Someone in Subaru must have placed great value on the experience it brings to the joy of driving.

Cost a couple of buck for them (if even that much) and marketing probably insisted. Many cars have them it is not as unique as it seems. Even the high end stuff have them although some of them also use the speakers for pretend VROOOOOM.

Exactly! Lots of tooling and cost to add clutter to an engine bay! What really amuses me is the electronic devices that are installed in certain cars that make bogo engines sound like a F1 or a V8 or a flying saucer!

I'd rather talk about Footfall. It would make a great television series now that we have the sfx to make it work. I wish they had followed up with sequels to the novel. I felt it left off in the middle of a bigger story.

The LFA had three systems specifically designed to provide fizz-inducing sound to the cabin. How many people who don't like the tube stick a fart-can on the car? Same-same, except I also get to enjoy your stupid-sounding car.

I bet it's the bean counters that demand it put in. A lot of people base their purchasing decision on a short like 5 minute test-drive around the block. I bet there's a ton of marketing research showing how important the sound and perceived sportiness is for a sports car and quantify how much sound equates to how much sales.

Yep. Just look at how many change the exhaust on their cars just for sound. Sound is important and to the general public buyer this works well. I bet the vast majority don't even know it is there and think that is how the car sounds.

The very first mod I ever made in my life was for sound!!!!!!!

Lot's of Niven-Pournelle stuff would be great. The Mots would be cool, but it would have to be looooong movie, or a series to do it right.

I'm still waiting for Starship Troopers to be done right as well. Seeing a "drop" done like it is in the book would be epic, and without the bug-farts.
