I also would interject that there are additional situations that may further influence this decision over the base risk assessment of specifically being on track with others (without the aforementioned tank). I just filed a claim with my insurance in February, have had my 86 back from a body shop for a week now, and I know in the back of my head that I absolutely cannot risk having to call Mercury again to see if they'll cover an increased risk driving event if there were another incident causing substantial damages so close to completing my prior claim. Also, the fact that I daily this car and my project car is not running further limits my options.

These facts along with your examples have helped me confirm that I will definitely get track insurance for this event, even if it rains and is cut short. But perhaps I will be somewhat selective on my future track days moving forward.

Download a copy of your policy, do a couple CTRL+F, and search word like Track, Race, Training, Performance, Education, Driver, then read the specific exclusion portion.

I've bought track day insurance for every track day I've done so far, albeit that's only 3. This year I bought a 6 pack from Lockton for $838 w/ $24k in coverage.

Here's my reasoning behind it. I still owe on my FR-S, which I know makes it kind of dumb to track it. I could handle it financially if I stuffed the car and had to walk away, making up the rest of what I owed. I wouldn't be happy about it though. Therefore, I deem it worthwhile for me to buy track day insurance. I'd rather be out $2-4k if I wreck, or maybe another $800-1,000/year if I don't, than having to shoulder that financial burden.

Now I know this isn't the smartest approach when doing track stuff. That's why I'm currently debating selling the FR-S to pick up a normal DD car and a track rat beater. we shall see though.

If I keep the FR-S and just continue to do track days, I will continue to buy insurance from Lockton. To me the added assurance that I won't be hit up for everything owed offers greater piece of mind. I don't go in expecting to crash, but I know that it's always a possibility.

If I owned the car outright, I probably wouldn't buy it though.

A couple of tips if you are going to buy track day insurance:

-If you know you'll be doing multiple events, buy the multipacks. The discount is not insignificant.
-Try to do more multi-day events, since the policies are based on events not the number of days. You could get 2-3x as many days at the track covered that way.

I only went with Lockton Affinity this year because I'm doing an event up in Canada and On Track doesn't cover any tracks outside the US.
I called this company because Speed Ventures events and/or Buttonwillow events were not listed on their application. I got a call back from the coolest insurance person I've ever spoken with. We discussed the event in greater detail, and he was pleased and agreed coverage would still work. He went on in 5 minutes and updated the form so I could resubmit.

Cancelling Lockton and going with these guys, who are running with an admitted A carrier. I must say, +2 for OnTrackInsurance.com

Thanks for the input guys, I just picked up a policy with OnTrackInsurance as well. I chatted with them on the phone a bit, very helpful and super friendly Hopefully I don't need to find out how good their coverage really is, haha.
