I think I had reply on this post before.
I had 4 speeding tickets, and many other tickets....my license was at the edge of suspension. I even got a mail from DMV suggesting me going to see a psychiatrist.... |

Really? Those that I see around (apparently, they are legal here) are either darkened, or convex, or both, so I am pretty sure that the only reason is to hinder identification. I think that convex surface is to cause the reflection of the flash to obscure the tag number. I have never seen license plates damaged by rocks to noticeable extent. |

Also most cameras used in those instances have ir filters and reflection filters to cut down glare, even if you had one of those fake anti red light camera flash devices its a waste of money.

No speeding tickets for me because stealth mounted radar detector, I highly suggest you invest in one and clear the tickets and marks on your license so far. The detector pays for itself after 1-3 detections, mine has well over paid it self.

And I was surprised you don't find that front license plates are often riddled with chips in the paint, as well as, bugs that are impossible to remove. Cars get clear bras all the time. Why not the license plate too, especially since my vanity plate takes 3-4 months to get? |

Now, also see all those white dots? That is not dirt but the cover is sandblasted from salters and other crap thrown up on the road. That cover is only a year and a half old and was brand new when it went on the car. My last set of plates had the paint blasted right off after 6 years of use. Edit: Actualy you can see the damage to the plate in this pic. Right above the I.

Still, I think that most peole who use plate covers just don't know that, and they believe that they would work. Same as people who used to hang a CD on the rear view mirror thinking it would jam speed radars. Also, some covers I saw around were so dark that they definitely hindered visual identification. I don't understand why those drivers weren't caught by the police and ordered to remove the covers Last edited by mdm; 04-09-2016 at 01:05 AM. |

Mine are actually very dark and you can see how easy the phone flash cut through it. Those camera strobes are much stronger than they appear and unless painted right out they will get a perfectly clear pic. You are right though that most people using them think they block the camera.

Wow. I went out to look at mine. OK, I must admit it has a few scratches, visible on dark lettering, not on white background. I probably never looked closely enough. Still, it looks pretty decent after 10 year, and going once through a bunch of bushes, which actually may have caused some of the scratches.
