If melting is a widespread issue then it would definitely explain the condensation issues that people develop over time. Mine haven't started melting or condensating yet but I assume it's only a matter of time. Really need to try out the clear tint strip on the top that was suggested earlier in the thread.

It will surely melt if you leave it in the sun for a couple hours, I'm assuming now it's the acrylic plastic focusing in that one area as we now know the LED drivers aren't the ones creating the heat

I've parked my car outside in the sun all day for the last 4 weeks with those clear TOMS installed and haven't developed any visible melting issues, but I'm super paranoid about it.

WARNING: Toms Taillight owners, check for melting!

I bought a warranty set (Brand new, never installed) from a member yesterday. Installed last night and I'm at an autocross right now in the hot sun. Haven't turned on the lights today. In the morning I was meticulously checking for any melting (perfect condition to start). Sure as shit, after a few hours of the passenger getting most of the morning sunlight, melting has begun to show! I put tape over the top to slow it down and it seems to be working. I'll be adding some wrap on top to protect them in the future.

The fact that I literally witnessed the melting occur throughout the day by just sitting in the sunlight leads me to believe that is the culprit. It must be very thin plastic in that particular spot.

I have JDM Clear Tom's Tail lights.

Update in later post #181

my driver's side clear tom's has a small area of melting in the same spot as everyone else's, while my passenger side is fine. the melted spot hasn't gotten larger in two years. however, i preemptively cut some spare vinyl tape i had and covered the area just in case. it's almost unnoticeable.

Link to the toms melting and you can see the condensation. There has been no rain here for a couple of days (northern cali). As an even better measure, I recently moved off Hawaii and did not have any leaks in the tails.

Just so you know to attach and show photos you used the right site imgur is the best however you attached it wrong. Simply right click, then open link in new tab then copy that link. Next just go to the top "insert image: button and paste that link into it like this:

WARNING: Toms Taillight owners, check for melting!

Added some 3M matte black wrap to shade the troublesome area. Hope this solves it.

Edit (4.18.2016):
Been driving the car to work for the last couple of weeks. The car is garaged at night but out in the sun during work hours Mon-Fri. I'm happy to say the melting has not progressed since I added the wrap.

I think the black plastic in that particular area is pretty thin. Perhaps the clear lens is creating a magnifying effect allowing it to get hot enough to melt. Or just the fact that it's clear and allowing a good amount of the sun's radiation to pass through compared to the red lens version. I know just touching the light where I put the black wrap is pretty hot to the touch when the sun is out.

Hopefully we'll get some results soon from someone who has used vinyl to block it off...

I'm really tempted to get the clears regardless. I like how they look + my car is garaged + I've only driven it 5k miles since I bought it January 2015... So I might be fine? :|
