Excel is probably not the best example since you can do about any format you want. Here's just a few...

3/24/2016
24/03/2016
2016/24/03
24-2016-Mar
Thu-24-Mar-03-2016
42453 (the native format for the date, time passed since 1/1/1900)

Day/Month/Year is a rest-of-the-world thing. The US is stupid about it, similar to how we don't use the metric system

If they put them in the same order all the time (day/month/year like 3/24/16) then there is never a problem. But some put the month first or in the middle and it gets confusing. But also you can usually figure out what is what since like 3/16/01 is either way expired or the year is in the middle
i reread what you said and it made sense lol.

the issue is that some people do end up using month/day/year, which causes all the confusion. Example. Expiration dates on food.

miles?

MILES?

1 mile = 1609 metres

1 kilometre = 1000 metres

if someone wants to know how many metres are in 3km. 3x1000 = 3000
in miles..... 3 x 1609 metres = what?

MMDDYY (or YYYY) > DDMMYY

MMDDYYYY makes the number easily sort into groups and it accomplishes the OP's March 4, 2001 objective numerically (no need to convert to alphanumeric).

Example
01022012
01052012
02092012
02152012
05092012
06272012

DDMMYY immediately wrecks that and therefore is IMO inferior.

Example
150312
280112
011012
120712

Best case is actually YYYYMMDD as it is the most easily sortable

Example
20120328
20120329
20120330
20140109
20140115
20160101
20160324

Add timestamp as HH:MM:SS:MS in 24 hour format (eg 16:36:00.810) for maximum temporal specificity bonus modifier).

Example
2016-03-24 15:21:05.810

Slave with spreadsheet all day and it begins to make more sense. Give your life to a database and this will become sad second nature. BRB self euthanizing now.

^ I hear you, but maybe Excel should treat leading zeroes as significant digits without me having to add a god damn apostrophe
