If they put them in the same order all the time (day/month/year like 3/24/16) then there is never a problem. But some put the month first or in the middle and it gets confusing. But also you can usually figure out what is what since like 3/16/01 is either way expired or the year is in the middle

i reread what you said and it made sense lol.

the issue is that some people do end up using month/day/year, which causes all the confusion. Example. Expiration dates on food.

MMDDYY (or YYYY) > DDMMYY

MMDDYYYY makes the number easily sort into groups and it accomplishes the OP's March 4, 2001 objective numerically (no need to convert to alphanumeric).
