Sounds like a pretty stupid solution to me. I am wondering what made them refrain from using a weight/pressure sensor.

Modern tech yo! Can't use those old fashioned mechanical switches in these ultra modern cars you know.

The funniest thing about this is that if the passenger spills something you're supposed to stop and either dry the seat or make the person sit in the back because the air bag may turn off (it says something along these lines in the owners manual). I guess making them sit in the back in this car would be good punishment for spilling a drink though.

I am sure there is an appropriate MEMS solution if someone really wants to be ultra modern.

This system works just fine really. Just don't put you cell phone on the seat while charging and all is good. I did it once, figured out what was going on in about 10 seconds and never put it there again. Not as big a deal as that long write up would have you think.

I had that problem before. On the advice of my co-worker I reached under the seat and found a piece of seat fabric was was pulled forward and was tripping the sensors (pushing up on the seat, I guess). I just pushed it back and haven't had a problem since. Also check for receipts or something underneath the seat. Now, I have had heavy grocery bags other items in the seat and the airbag sensor has not gone. I never have passengers in the car so I couldn't guess what the threshold is before it triggers.

I prefer my old-style solution, I can put basically anything there. For example, if I am in a traffic jam and hungry, and have food in my bag, I can put the bag on the passenger seat and eat, without worrying that my laptop or whatever will trip some sensors and bother me me with warning lights. As long as the bag weighs less than 15 kg (or whatever, don't know exactly), the car won't say anything.

Did you read beyond the first post? The sensors in these have no mechanical weight switch. Weight, something pushing on it, etc does not trigger it. Electronic signals and moisture do.

Then it was just a perfect coincidence that when I reached under and pushed the fabric back it went from chiming regularly to never again. (I was able to permanently unbuckle the seat belt.) Maybe I discharged something. Couldn't tell ya much beyond that.

Or had your phone on the seat and just don't remember. Maybe you had a loose wire or something.

Not cranky. It just reads that way. That is why I have taken to having pre comment clarifications when I say something that somebody would probably take as angry or a call out. Seems to be working since people actually respond reasonably instead of snapping back.

Oh and
I am not a damned engineer may their souls (if they have them) rot in hell!

Joke I actually like engineers.

Except electrical ones they suck.

Oh and engineering students. They think they know it all.

And civil engineers are rarely civil.

And those dumb sonsabitchs that drive trains. They can't design shit.
