I was originally looking at a WRX but i just couldnt find one for a decent price in my area, the STI was a little out of my budget. I knew i wanted something with AWD so i started looking at other vehicles. Test drove an AWD A4 and a Lexus IS250. The A4 was nice but it wasnt fun to drive. The IS250 was fun with the paddle shifters and super comfortable but it still lacked something. Next on the list was the BRZ, even though i had driven @limitedblkwrx SWP BRZ when it was stock, i still wanted to get some more wheel time on a BRZ. The minute i got it i knew i liked it more already. The smile on my face grew wider with each gear shift. My need for an AWD car went right out the window and i just didnt give a shit about it. So I guess thats when i knew i was taking that BRZ home.

I heard a rumor, must have been around 2006, that Subaru and Toyota were working together on a light RWD sports car. And I wanted it.

I first heard about the BRZ when I was reading a Consumer Reports magazine talking about the most reliable cars. This was around January or so when I got told that my undergrad present was going to be $15,000 to put down on a new car. I looked up lots of factors, primarily what type of body it was.

At first I looked into hatchbacks, as my 1st car was a crappy Chevy Aveo (the predecessor to the current Chevy Sonic). The hatch was convenient for me. I looked into hot hatches but nothing fun or interesting, all just FWD econo-boxes, they would just be an upgrade to what I had before and I wanted something different.

I looked into coupes for that difference and started with Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, Genesis, etc. But I was required to keep the car price under $32,000. I wanted a car with all the bells and whistles, top trim model, best engine, and sadly all those above cars were over my limit by a lot. And the more bare models were boring to me with 4-cyls or 6-cyls but I also wanted a car that was more unique than others, so the Mustang, Camaro and Challenger were out quick. I remembered that Subaru made good cars as my mom's previous car was an Outback and it was really good! I saw the WRX but I couldn't at the time drive stick and tried it before and didn't like it, it was just above my price range though. I looked into the base Impreza and could get the fully loaded one but I would always have the thought that it's nothing compared to the WRX and I'd have buyers remorse.

Then I discovered the FRS and BRZ in the Consumer Reports and looked further into it, a car with limited production and new to the scene, with a Limited package and automatic and it's one of the best cars in its segment? With the very reliable and efficient Boxer engine?

I was sold. But to get the FRS or BRZ? Well, that was easy. I got the one that wasn't a Scion.

The really hard part was actually finding the exact car I wanted.

I finally settled on a Galaxy Blue BRZ Limited Automatic. Talk about a hard car to find.

I looked all over the West coast at dealerships online for their current and incoming stock and some were close, like a Galaxy Blue in Auto but the Premium trim, or a Limited Auto in Grey or something. I had my heart settled on Galaxy blue because it's such a sexy color but super rare which made me want it more.

After a couple of weeks of nothing and lost hope, I stumbled upon a Subaru/Hyundai dealership in San Diego who had a Galaxy Blue BRZ Limited in Automatic being shipped and I called them right away and asked if it was available. They said it already had a deposit on it, and I began looking for a noose for myself (lol). Then just casually I mentioned I had $15,000 cash and really wanted it and the dealer said "sorry, we'll let you know if something comes up" or something like that.

He probably hung up the phone and his manager punched him in the face for losing a quick $15k cause he called me back 20 minutes later and said the car was available! Amazing how throwing a figure like that changes things.

A few weeks later I had my one way plane ticket and cashiers checks and picked up the car and drove back home, but before I did I had the entire front end paint protected to keep it safe and preserved.

I am happily the owner of a super rare 2013 BRZ, since only 1/2 are in Limited trim and only 1/3 of BRZ's are automatic and only 8% were made in Galaxy Blue, which is now a discontinued color. I have one of only about 250 such cars ever made. I'm so spechul!

It's not my profile, it's the company's profile. I am the only guy working here with a BRZ, and 2 others have FRS. I post on this profile as it's my job to.

+1
Maybe even before that. I didn't know at first that Subaru would be involved, but immediately wanted another RWD Toyota sports car. I nursed my MR2 for years waiting for the release.

The moment I sat in a FRS the day it rolled off the truck at the dealership next to my old job. I knew clearer than anything I had ever known, an 86 was the car. It had to be the car. I left that day with a quote for a $500 a month payment and told the sales guy "I like it, I love it and I will have one, but not for that money every month, I'll be back once I have a down payment saved. I also want to check out the BRZ."

I knew I had have to save ~8K for an FRS so I then started working over whether I wanted the BRZ or FR-S and if I wanted the BRZ... Premium or limited.

My vehicle at the time had both GPS and keyless entry/start, which I hadn't wanted but had ended up with. Ended up loving the keyless entry/start, it's game changing tech. Eventually it came down to having had many Subaru's in the past, not being a Toyota fan in any way, and deciding that if I was goinf to save up $8K I might as well save up $12K and get the one I really wanted otherwise I would always regret it.

About 11 months later I left a Subaru dealer with my brand new '13 BRZ Limited and $11,000 dollars less in hand. Haven't regretted it for a minute.

I bought my wife a new 2014 Forester for Christmas. I did not want to keep my Tribeca after that. All of our kids had moved out a year before that, and I finally realized after almost thirty years of raising kids I could get something fun again. I had heard really good things about the twins but I was originally thinking of a used Porsche until I saw a BRZ in the showroom waiting for my vehicle to be serviced. I waited a few more months and saw a white Limited on the lot. The sales manager let me drive it alone for as long as I wanted. I drove it home to show my wife, and by that time I was smitten with it. I had owned a 280Z back in the early eighties, and the BRZ felt like the spiritual successor to that car.

I was driving home from work and my Audi lost 3rd gear. I drove straight to the Subaru dealership.

Exactly how I felt! I came from a 280Z into the BRZ - wrote about it here:
