I mean, if you take existing aftermarket parts and bolt them on to the new car with 205hp/156tq, will it make that much more, or about the same +5. Here's an example.
Let's say my '13 is 160whp stock and I manage a good build that gets me 200whp (hypothetical). Will a similarly modded '17 start at 165whp and go to 205whp, or will whatever they've changed make it even better? Conversely, could it actually make it worse? Lets say they managed the 5 hp/tq bump by changing the tune and making it more efficient, leaving you less wiggle room. Now your 200whp build is only good for 190whp. I might be over thinking the tuning here, but I actually think this might be something to consider.

Would think the BRZ one would be planned as well. Subaru has historically introduced their updates to the BRZ well after the FRS though so could still be a while until they release info.

This thread is way too long.
Buy new, this is what you will get. Buy used, get the current model. Both good choices.

Also I believe I've read somewhere that they changed the intake manifold and the valves for it to become more fuel efficient and raised the power by 5. I wonder how much it increased in torque?

I'm guessing by "powertrain upgrade" all they did was do a more aggressive tune. So literally no difference if you've already tuned your car. But more updates will comes us I have zero actual facts. I'd love if it was a slight engine internals upgrade somewhere |

Depends what they changed. Likely they just closed the gap to the engines potential, which means no changes. Either in a tune or in a "bolt-on" part modification.
However, if they changed something on the internals, then there may be more potential. |

I'm curious what the BRZ elitists' arguments will be now, considering it's now officially the weaker car.
I also am sad that as new things happen, facelifts, engine bay modifications, etc, the BRZ and FRS will grow farther apart. Hopefully it doesn't get so bad that people can only make aftermarket for BRZ or FRS. |

Any additional information the gear ratios? Because that's where you'll probably notice the acceleration difference.

What I think alot of us are forgetting is that, the new one MAY fix some of the problems of the old one.
So instead of having a hoard of Crickets you'll now that a swarm of something else possibly. all in jest, but really Im sure they did some fixes.

....what? I'm almost positive any change they made to the engine and transmission will be the same as the BRZ. |

I guess I'm just offering a different spin on the car buying mentality. It might seem odd to look at which car you want based on what you have to change to get the right power, but lets assume anyone buying the car is going to mod it regardless. If you outright want a new car and don't care, buy the '17. But if you plan on modding the car for power, maybe wait and see which one responds better to tuning. If I was all about the numbers, I'd want to start with whichever car makes them easiest, wouldn't you?
People might go, "Oh, 5 extra hp/tq doesn't mean anything. They failed again." But what if that leads to an extra 20whp just because they changed the right stuff? I dunno though. This seems like a unique way to look at it to me. I do that sometimes and people just shake their heads at me.
