In regards to incline though, is it necessary to use the handbrake for hill stops? I find it annoying and I'm much better using the foot brake.
Some people say the 86/FRS/BRZ isn't 'torquey' enough so the handbrake is the best for hills as it can damage the car more using the foot brake, and do you run the risk of rolling back using the brake pedal? |

haha, usually the older instructors always insist you use the handbrake method, however I feel like on steep hills you may roll back a little

Nothing wrong or noob with using the handbrake. Whatever suits you, if you don't want to hurry with your feet, or if you care about the nerves of the driver behind you in case you roll back a bit, use the handbrake. Otherwise, go with foot brake.
The decision should depend on what you are comfortable with, what is convenient in particular cirmstances, and on the steepness of the hill. Not on someone on the internet saying it's noob. Before I started braking with my left foot, I sometimes used handbrake when starting on very steep hills in an AT car. So what. |

I had never heard of using the handbrake on a hill until that thread. I don't think anyone genuinely "instructs" it, or it is a relatively new thing.
Or people can't drive. |

No... for parking on an incline. It is basically supposed to be a failsafe if your car slips out of gear while your parked. Hence the other common term "emergency brake."

I don't like the name because it sort of implies it can be substitute for your regular brakes if they fail, and it barely can. Anyway, it's a tool which has more than one use, and facilitating uphill starts is one of them. |

Edit, can we just permanently change the name to "drift handle"? |

So are you saying on steep hills with traffic, you'd be using no handbrake, just being skilled and swift with the brake?

I realise my edit made my last post seem kinda ambiguous but I was just trying to work in the drift handle comment. I am 100% for using the hand brake for things other than parking |

Using the ebrake on a hill is perfectly fine. Engaging the ebrake, getting the clutch and gas just right when the car starts to tug, and then disengaging the ebrake. This is much less harmful to the clutch rather than working the gas and clutch to simply stay in place on the hill.
