What brand is it?
Indy Oil SXR Synthetic racing oil 5W50.
It's my first fill with Indy, and it feels fine. Seems to have coloured up a bit quicker than expected though. I'll be due for a change at the end of Feb after the Michelin Cup event at Zwartkops, and I'll have a good look at what comes out...

In SA, this is not a common spec of oil at all.. I looked high and low, could not find it.
I was gonna say that you'd be pushed to find 0W-20 anywhere in SA. I've never seen it anywhere.

Ok thanks.

I was looking at the Total Quartz & Elf brands, trying to establish a supply route.

Maybe the "Trolls" didnt examine the OPs stats so carefully to notice that he was from SA since he didnt mention in his post?

And THIS TROLL is STILL correct that 0W20 is what is specified for this engine by the manufacturer. PERIOD.

Just because 0W20 is not available in SA (and Toyota SA knows this) does not change this fact.

Oh for goodness sake. It's not available in SA for a reason. It is not the correct oil for our climate. 5W30 all the way.

Thanks everyone for the input, the only reason i asked is I am concerned about long term engine damage from possible wrong oil. Want to keep the car for a long time and don't want to buy a new engine when the warranty is over or when i eventually go forced induction.

I'd stick with Toyota SA's recommendation - they wouldn't recommend a particular oil for nothing

I'm not so sure anymore.
Maybe we should get some opinions from experts in North America?

Ek geniet dit on 'n droll te wees. BTW, that's troll in Afrikaans

You don't need to, you ALREADY got an opinion from a Toyota expert from SA:

I think you need to lookup the definition of "troll" perhaps it means something different in SA?
Oh, and look up "Logic" while you are at it because I think you are challenged in that department as well.

Your argument goes something like this:
Patient - "What type of medication is best for my sore leg?"
Doctor -"Ibuprofen"
Patient "well we don't have ibuprofen in SA, so Aspirin then"
Doctor - "Um...Sure"

Why is this still a thing. Can we all agree to disagree? 0W-20 is speced for the car, 5W-30 or w/e SA Toyota wants will work too but I personally would still use 0W-20 if I was in SA but that is just me and my opinion. Either one will be fine really now lets all move on with life

Just be aware that the USA manual and the Australian (and I suspect South African manual are different

Americian

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=23

only mentions 0w20

Australian manual

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...9&d=1401770791

Mentions 0w20,5w30 and 5w40

Note also the part on second page that reads

"An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds or under high loads"

Remember these cars are spec'ed for daily drivers at road speeds not people who drive hard for long periods like mountain runs or tracking or modified or on E85 ect.

Watch you oil temps on track or hard road driving on a hot day 30C plus, without an oil cooler you will see 120C plus , remember oil viscosity spec is measured at 100C. so its going to be lower than what the spec is at those temps.

South africians like Aussie's generally don't se temps below about 5C (40F) even on coldest days. and 30C plus days are very common.

most people don't run an oil cooler (which is best option) .

This is the AFRICA forum. Kinda obvious.
