Thanks for the quotes from totally irrelevant North American Scion books which are meaningless and misleading here.
We have our own books, published by Toyota South Africa, for our Toyota 86's, which are also different models and spec levels to the rest of the world. Our models are closest to the Middle East models. Every 86 sold in SA comes with a full service plan, and a very comprehensive and excellent warranty. Very different to the watered down warranties of North America. Toyota South Africa will put their recommended oil in your car, whether you, or any opinionated person from overseas thinks it's the best oil or not. It doesn't matter - THERE IS NO CHOICE, unless you want to kiss your three year fully inclusive service plan and a three year warranty goodbye. Obviously not. I hope this gets my point home it doesn't matter what you think is right. What Toyota South Africa thinks is right is paramount, whether it's right or wrong..... and it isn't wrong. I'm not arguing the merits of oil, I'm telling you that you're giving OP very bad advice. OP was worried whether they put the right oil in his car. They did, and that's what I said, and you bozos try to tell him otherwise. I say again to the probably well-meaning folks from overseas, and the trolls - go away, you're giving very bad advice in the South African context. You judge everything by what happens in your country, and that's wrong. You have no idea how Toyota SA works... To the troll from Canada - yes, I do know a lot about oils, and have probably forgotten more than you have ever learnt. Please go away, you won't get any "Thank You" points here.

Yes, that's the general international manual.
Read the South African "Book of Life" - it says whatever Toyota SA says, goes, and that's gospel in South Africa. And Toyota SA does not use 0w20. They use 5w30. Finish and klaar... So you need to argue your point with Toyota South Africa. This is the book, and the cover and first 2 pages look like this...

I work for Toyota SA and maybe can help here, I also owned an 86 so have some knowledge.
The overseas guys are correct, 0W20 is specced for this car, designed for it and will run fine. In SA, this is not a common spec of oil at all.. I looked high and low, could not find it. In the early days of the 86 here, there were issues with engines running bearings, some down to driver abuse and some legit failures. As a result, Toyota SA were very strict on oil specs, they recommended 5W30 for exclusive use in the 86. If any customer was proven to use any other oil, they stood the chance of losing their warranty. In our country there is always a guy looking for a loophole, hence this kind of stance from Toyota SA. So Fish eagle is correct in saying for SA, due to Toyota SA policy, best to stick with the Toyota oil of 5W30 if your car is in warranty.

The trolls are also not considering the fact that this is a very hot climate and we don't see snow or sub zero temperatures.

Yes. I've been using their oil for over two years in my Vortech supercharged car, and I've only recently changed to another brand - not by choice, but because I get oil sponsorship. My car's done 24 track days using Toyota's oil, and it doesn't use a drop of oil. BTW, I'm now using a 5w50 synthetic racing oil.

As noted here, our climate may not necessitate a 0W20 oil, I think supply of it will be an issue in SA anyway..
