I coould just power off the car, but then I have to wait for the head unit to start up and reconnect with my phone right after. meh. Also meter maids are more likely to come after me if im double parked with my car off >_> |

Now... My wife still has hers and just keeps the fob in her purse even when I am driving (the car does not care) and that alarm saved my bacon when I dropped her off someplace and it started dinging like mad. Except for once when I dropped her off and went to do an errand (buy beer) about 5 blocks away. It dinged and since I had my son with me I said not to bother giving me the fob I would lust leave it running while I ran in. Of course I got there and out of force of habit turned it off. We walked back for the fob. She was livid. Not fun.

When we're out together in the BRZ, which has keyless ignition, my wife usually puts her purse in the trunk... with her fob in it. The BRZ will beep if the fob is left in the trunk. It eventually stops once you start the car, but it is annoying. Now she keeps the fob in a little metal pill box in her purse. Strangely, sometimes it works - i.e. the car doesn't beep - but sometimes she can open the locked trunk with the button on the car, which implies it is sensing the fob anyway.

I see more and more reasons to stick to old-fashioned physical keys as much as possible. Forget security, it seems to be more hassle with keyless.

That's okay. If someone breaks into and tries to steal my car, I have security cameras and enough driveway I can... Wait, that's not legal in California.
![]() I park so that my car has to drive in reverse to get out. It's a stick shift and there is a trick to put it in reverse. Those both reduce my chances of theft by 97%. By my calcuation, somewhere near ~90% of people can't/don't drive stick shift and ~70% of those who can/do don't drive a Mazda stickshift. That and what idiot tries to steal a base model Mazda? A rep at a dealership told me something to that effect. It didn't hurt my feelings, much.

Have you ever used a keyless entry vehicle? I've had this car with keyless for well over a year and it has functioned flawlessly. I never had keyless before, and it wasn't something I thought was a big deal, but if I had to get a new car tomorrow, I would want it to be keyless. It's just so convenient in so many ways.

The only reason why I would want a key is if the battery ever died and I could push start/clutch start it. Not sure if it would work with the keyless versions of these cars.

I think peoples' aversion to keyless is a result of their lack of understanding. For example, I often hear people say, "Well what if the battery dies? I don't want to get stuck if that happens." Okay. What happens when your non-keyless entry car's key fob dies? You use the key to manually open the door? Guess what? You do the same thing if the keyless fob dies! "What about starting the car? There is no spot for a key! Ha!" Well, you just hold the "dead" fob up against the start button, and the car will see it and then you can start it as normal. There isn't a situation where the keyless version is going to screw you over somehow, but people still associate keyless entry with "voodoo magic that probably won't work half the time," when that is simply untrue. |
