Where ever it was it was probably new when Hawk attended.

Close, Randolph-Macon College, founded 1830. Wasn't quite 180 years old when I graduated, but is now.

Close...there are still folks at the Homecoming games older than me, but my classmates and I get closer and closer to the front of the line each year.

That's really not true. Now, I do not believe that a college degree is right for everyone or best for everyone, but to say that you can't apply degrees in real life is completely inaccurate. You absolutely can, and a great people do, but you have to choose to. The degree itself doesn't innately make you better.

I mean my major was Professional Pilot and I fly airplanes.. so maybe a bad example but I applied it well anyway. Granted you don't need a degree per se to get a job flying planes either. It's really hard to quantify how much a well rounded education (after all it isn't all electives) really helps you in your life let alone the actual career path it might apply towards, however. I mean I wouldn't even think about trying to actually quantify something before I had a university education. For my Master's (in Space Studies but no I don't even astronaunt) thesis I quantified how much rocket fuel is available on Near-Earth Asteroids (NEOs) and it passed a peer review as well got an A from the Professor. Does it make my landings any better, probably not although advanced aerodymaics may have helped but only slighty and I'm not being sarcastic it's mostly physical motor skills, spatial intelligence, and experience. The best argument against a college or university education is that maybe you pay a premium for the certification and you could buy a ton of books and information for $20k or $100k or whatever you spend to have someone hold your hand to read through and then vouch for your knowledge afterwards. However, the knowledge may not be enough in and of itself to convince someone to invest in you. I paid for my flying education programming computers. I'm great at it. I'm also uncertified, unethical, and unlicensed with no degree or even single online certification courses to show for it. Microsoft, Apple, Google, or Oracle wouldn't even interview me for anything above a customer service / tech support position though probably. So maybe there is a pay-to-play premium to it as well. I myself though as a grad do know that other grads will have met a specfic standard and if I was hiring someone it would carry weight with me.

i know part of the forum rules state we arent allowed to talk about politics (for obvious reasons), but are we allowed to discuss free college (even if its part of some pres. agendas)? this would be an interesting topic for sure in this community, just dont want to piss off any mods.

Now that you made the connection probably not. I personally do think knowledge in-of-itself should be free on a philosophical level. I'm a big fan of open source and the like. Still I realize that nothing is really free in real life, even online college. I mean the fact that you have to buy your way into learning is almost an inherent inefficiency but yet here I am a hippocrite since I charge a pretty healthy hourly rate for flight instruction (I still do a little on the side even though I fly private charter now). This on top of making the student rent the plane. But that's why it becomes political because it starts into how much should we be subsiding the next generations training/education. I personally would be happy to forget about what I spent on college if it meant a better educated world for everyone but most people are probably too selfish to see the greater good. I mean the competition should be for your brains not your wallet. Then again I wish my BRZ was free, and airplanes, and my houses, and eveything... it sounds great on paper, it just isn't how the world works. The money always has to come from somewhere.

Philosophical nature of knowledge, sure; but, fiscal policy in regards to education, nope.

Obviously "free" in free college is only a label, I think everyone understands that it is about whether college education (specifically public college education) should be funded from public money, i.e., taxes, the same way as lower-level education is. Or highways, the military, police, or national parks and wildlife refuges ;-).

We really probably shouldn't have this conversation on this forum.
