Cutting Coils: Let the hate flow....

RS-R Downs are very interesting. It seems like that basically what I want without having to use a spacer and the spring rates are very mild increases...in fact the initial rear rate is less than that of a stock FRS. Of course those rears are progressive which means that the final spring rate is higher. I contacted RS-R to find out what the final spring rate is, but they have to get the info from Japan.

I'm going to find out a little more about them, before I make a choice. In respect to cutting and maxing stock spring rate, it seems like BRZ springs up front and FRS springs in the back would be best. I know that people will say that it's upsetting the balance, but while the two vehicle have different spring rate and dampening rates front and rear, all the after market parts are only for both vehicles and therefore would be upsetting that balance just the same.

The listed spring rate is probably the final rate for the RSRs.

Stock BRZ front and FRS rear actually is pretty good. Shocks are the same between the two cars.

Did you look at the JDM STI pinks?

While on the subject of changing / modifying coils, I was thinking of using old mattress springs as I'm on a tight budget. What spring rates do you guys think I would get with this set up?

Calculate it yourself:

Spring Rate = GD^4/*ND^3

G=11.25*10^8
D=Wire Diameter in Inches
N=Number of Active Coils
D=Mean Coil Diameter in Inches. Mean Diameter is:
I.D. = 1 Wire plus inside Diameter
O.D. = 1 Wire minus outside Diameter
8=A Constant for all Coil Springs

Just speculation, the rate won't be high enough. I'd just cut the stock ones.

Theres a guy selling his OEM springs off of his FRS, his name is... @HueyLooie . I have a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid that I use for DD but I want to lower it. Will the oem springs from an FRS fit on my honda if I cut them? I know you have experience with cutting as you cut the same springs. I'm looking to lower my civic a couple inches and was wondering if you could help

I figured out the calculations on the previous page, the variable is still how much coil to cut to achieve desired ride height.

The number of active coils definitely wouldn't work. I'd have to JB Weld some extra ones on.
