I appreciate this is a generalisation and doesn't apply to everybody but there might an element of truth there.

There's a shift towards living in urban centres, partly because of the ease of transit, and partly because a lot of the younger crop can't afford houses at these prices (and with this job market).

And given the lousy traffic situations in many urban centres, those who choose to drive will likely opt for the most pain-free driving options, whether it be something like ZipCar, or our "glorious" future autonomous autopods.

While the roadside assistance guys were trying to get my car to start, we were all sharing this lament for bygone days and bygone cars. Even the BRZ has a bit too much tech for my liking (and it is already one of the comparative holdouts).

We're through the looking glass, people...

Seriously? It's been around for 5 years or so. A very small SUV (or rather a compact styled to look like a weird SUV), with 1.6L tubocharged engine, 190 HP, FWD or AWD, CVT or MT, 20-30k price range in the US.

I refute your statement. If you do pay close attention you would have read about this. Googling ""nissan juke"" (with quotation marks) returns About 15,900,000 hits and Googling "Nissan Juke" (no quotation marks) about 16,700,000.
I guess you haven't heard of the Juke-R either. That's the model with the GT-R engine stuffed into it. Built by Nissan.

actually there've been lots of articles stating this for years now. teens waiting later and later to get their licenses, percentage of adults with drivers licenses at all time lows, etc etc. i think the reasons that you state are definitely a factor, and i also think the way people parent today is reinforcing it. i'm only a year older than your kid, but when i was a kid, my parents let me walk to school, the arcade, the mall, my friend's house, by myself. i even went to a foreign country by myself when i was 13. it gave me a sense of independence so i couldn't wait to get a license of my own and be able to get around on my own. nowadays parents don't let their kids walk anywhere by themselves for fear of them getting kidnapped by pedos. the parents shuttle their kids everywhere, and they end up growing up with a sense that the person that has to drive is the one who got stuck with the chore. i used to volunteer and mentor teens at my church and was shocked when i'd drive them home and they didn't even know the directions to their house. they had no clue when it came to street names or freeway names. they were just that used to their parents picking them up, leaving everything to them, and immediately zoning out on the smartphone as soon as they got in the car. i feel like i knew where everything in my city was at by the time i was 12.

Holy shit. When I was young lad, I was given all the rope in the world to hang myself. Sometimes I'd come home cover in cuts, scrapes and bruises if we went out for bike rides. I'd hate to think of what kind of assumptions would be made about my parents if I was a kid and showing up for school on Monday with a bunch of fresh wounds, let alone being caught by the police walking home from school as a 10 year old with my 7 year old brother.
