Do you know what caused it? And has it came back since you cleaned it out?

That is galvanic corrosion. It happens when you take 2 dissimilar metals, put them in contact with each other, and introduce an electrolyte.

In your case, it is the stainless steel cam solenoid covers acting as an anode for the aluminium engine block. From your other pictures, all the other steel/stainless steel fixtures are suffering the same fate.

The stainless cam solenoid covers have got the kind of galvanic corrosion I usually see on outboards recovered from the bottom of the ocean.

The frame should be completely fine... As long as the paint and anti-rust coating on the bottom hasn't been seriously compromised.

But wow... Just wow.

I'm trying to think how that much corrosion could have happened in such a short time though. What was the environment / history of the car? Lots of salt, lots of water... Winter? Ocean climate? Left abandoned along a seawall in the direct spray for 6 straight months?

I've seen that kind of galvanic corrosion on neglected outboard motors, which are left literally hanging in the ocean for months, or on cars that have spent their entire life driving winters in the rust belt... But never on a car that new.

Any chance you've had a leaky battery? We had a battery get a pinhole crack near the top once on a wrx and shot acid clear across the engine bay, everything had little spatters of rust on it.

Will it cause any damage in the long run?

Oh, I don't think so.

Like mentioned, just clean it up and give it a shot of anti-rust stuff every now and then.

I live on the Oregon coast. I have a boat and commercial fishermen here swear by a couple of products. One is Corrosion Block and another is Corrosion X It is not cheap but will stop corrosion immediately and will protect your alluminum and electrical connections from getting corrosion. You can buy corrosion block at Napa in a spray can or you can find it on the coast or on line at places like West Marine. You just spray it over the whole engine compartment and it will dry with no residue. You can buy it in the larger size for about 35 dollars and get your own sprayer or buy the spray cans from Napa for under 20 dollars. It is very very good for electrical contacts. and will not rust or corrode after application you might want to spray it every two or 3 years. Best products there are for rust or corrosion. also if you live near the beach or salt water environment you can spray the whole car down with salt away or salt terminator. I run it thru my outboard motor to keep salt crystals from clogging my water jackets then spray the whole boat down and the salt disappears and paint looks like new again. You can use it on cars too. Just use a hose end sprayer for weeds.
