@Ultramaroon Tried this out in my work truck this morning. Had the heater all the way to "low" and the fan off for the first 7 or 8 minutes then turned the heat on. In that short amount of time, the water temp got up to around 85-90*C (operating temp is around 100). I'm impressed, and feel a bit sheepish that I've never actually really tried this before. But it was glorious having heat that quickly and not being blasted by cold air for 20 minutes. Though, it was only -6*C when I got into the truck this morning, so that may have helped compared to the last two mornings, which were around -15

Actually I am a bit shocked that anybody that grew up in Ontario didn't know this already. been doing it that way for 40 years and quite honestly figured it was common knowledge. Should be included in basic diver's ed anywhere that gets cold but I guess they are only worried about rules of the road.

What I don't get is why (all) cars don't do this automatically. My '85 MR2 is the only car I ever owned that did this. It wouldn't turn the heat on until the engine temp was up enough to produce heat. Never owned another car that would do that.

All my Mitsubishi/DSM (7 in total) cars did this. Of course any older car with a heat activated thermostat sort of did it since they only circulated through the engine until it was warmed up. Even then it was still better to wait until the thermostat had opened and let the hot coolant run through the system before turning the blower fan on so that it remained warmed up.

Yep. Same principal that Ultra spoke on since the heater core is effect just a small rad.
Used that more than once with an overheating old V8.

IDK if you've been informed yet but I'd you read in your manual, my brz, is not allowed to have snow chains, the well is not big enough. So don't tear up the car

My 1997 Pathfinder had an Auto setting that did that. It was one of the only things on that vehicle that worked.

Used to do that all the time on my old Z. It was missing its fan shroud and would get hot sitting in traffic. I was too stupid to make the connection until years later. <facepalm>
