If the cycles aren't 360 appart then it's not a boxer, but a 180degree V4 and it would be much less efficient and thus less powerful

The "water gargling noise" or "boxer rumble," whether you're a hater or a fan, really is only because of the headers. OEM turbo subaru engines use unequal length exhaust manifold (headers), which has lengths such that two of the four exhaust pulses per engine cycle leave the manifold at the same time. Thus, you get a big 'burp' if you will, followed by an absence of exhaust pressure and sound.
A boxer can also have equal length headers fitted, making it sound more like a porsche or

i think it's a given that the ft-86 will have DI. just the fb20 140ps jdm forrester spec version doesn't. in fact in the japanese site i posted there's a q and a session with subaru engineers that says the FB series was designed with the implementation of DI in the future in mind.

Subaru probably has a whole upgrade schedule planned out already. They and Porsche like to keep their basic engine architecture around for a long time.
Edit: Those weird con-rods kinda freak me out.

I like the rods, but damn it only makes sense on one of the banks (in te schematic it would be the left bank assuming that the motor spins clockwise) since the power transmition would be liniar, or more so anyway.. But on the other side it makes it worse.. So here is to me hoping that the artist fucked up
