I was 100% sincere. Wikipedia is a very good source of information on the basics of just about any subject.
To just dismiss someone because they use wikipedia is elitist at best.

Should you take wikidepia at it's word for anything that would change your universe in any serious, world altering way? - No.

Like I said, dude, if you're taking anything after my first two posts seriously, you're doing the Internet wrong.

I usually tip. I'll tip to minimum if the service was ok, and I'll tip more if it was good. I don't care about looks or whatever. Now if they are just being a **** and ignoring me, then yeah, the tip will be very little, instead of none. But I always ask if the tip is going directly to them or not. I prefer it if it's straight to them instead of pooled together and split. That's more like a grading curve to help others.

I don't tip. If they don't make enough money then they can quit.
I don't tip because society says I have to.

All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

Another of my pet peeves.
If the establishment has any kind of 'mandatory tipping of 15% on parties above X', then that is exactly what they will get is 15%, not a penny more.

And when I calculate the tip I only do it on the bill, and not the total including tax. (I know -nit, but they shouldnt get tipped extra for the taxes).

In the few times time I have seen this, it's usually included as part of the bill itself.

In cases where it's not, who is enforcing the "mandatory" tipping?

Yeah, I know they add it to the bill.
But in those cases where they feel "entitled" to the tip before they have even begun my service, then they will not get any additional.

Just a little background on the other side of the 'you should tip because wait staff get paid less than minimum wage' argument. Yes the wait staff is paid a small amount, BUT if the tips for a wait person does not equal out to at least minimum wage, the restaurant owner is legally bound to pay out the difference up to minimum wage. At least here in America, don't know how Canada does it, and apparently they already get paid minimum wage in Australia.

Now my take on the situation, I tip regardless of service and around 30% average of the price of the meal. But tipping is also not just for wait staff. You're supposed to tip your barber/hair dresser, masseuse, and other personnel that offer a physical service to you personally. I've never received a massage myself, but I do tip my hair dresser regularly. Just an FYI

It depends.

If they are nice, service with a smile, I have enough cash, the experience was positive, area was clean, any issues were resolved within 3-5min, food was brought warm to hot and wait-person came at least once to ask if everything was ok, they get some $$$, usually x>$5.00.

If any of those are faulty, I give X<$3.00. ...if..... I give.

Yeah, i'm picky, I got high standards for service and tipping... and it sucks for a lot of people...but a job is a job and when you got a job, you got to do it well. IMO IMO IMO IMO

p.s. I despise forceful tipping. It's bullsh!t to have people live on low minimum wage. This is a social issue not an issue by our faulty policies not my fault.

I just go to places where there's no tipping like fast casual restaurants.

I tip less, (like 10%) for any place that has self service stands where the "server" is basically just a food runner.

but i do love those self checkout places at grocery stores, saves me time because people stand in line waiting for McLovin to slowly work his stoned brain to scan stuff while the self checkout is empty and i'm in and out in a minute.

for tipping itself, as someone who's worked in the industry, who has many friends still in the industry, i tip right around 20% for good service. bad service gets about 10% and a chat with the manager, amazing service gets what i feel it deserves and a chat with the manager to ensure the above and beyond effort doesn't go unnoticed.
