Convex / Concave
Going to buy the Enkei Raijin most likely very soon.
I wanted to stagger them 18x8.5 front and 18x9.5 rear. However, I think that's going to be noticeable and the fronts would be convex, which is no good imo. So, I thought of doing 18x9.5 all around on a slightly meatier tire like Mich PSS in 245/35 front and 265/35 rear. I know I would need coils for that 9.5 to fit the front, but is it weird to run staggered tire sizes, but square wheels??? I could just run 245 square and be done, but then I could do that on 8.5 with stock suspension. Not sure if it's worth it to be all concave... I could just be all convex. Ugh! Decisions! |

You could also run square setup(including tires) and run a small spacer in the rear to make the fit more even to the fenders.

Imo, all concave will look way better. I don't think you would necessarily need coils to fit a 9.5 up front, depending on offset and camber. As far as running staggered tire sizes, I don't think it would be an issue as long as they are the same model, but I've never tried it so I don't have any firsthand experience.

it's funny I just spent a bunch of time looking at the Enkei Raijins. I'm between these and the XXR 530's. Obv the price of the XXR's are awesome but I really have to have more of a glossy black which the Raijins are. In a perfect world I would probably get the Raijins and run 9.5 all around but according the the Raijin thread you absolutely need coilovers..and that I am not doing. So the other option would be to run a staggered setup and I'm okay with the look but worried about damaging the handling balance..I know there will be more understeer..not good.. Or do I just go with the XXR's and paint them? (since I am wary about powdercoating)

Why are you wary of powdercoating?

it definately compromises the structural integrity of the wheel because of the heat added in the process..with XXR's being on the cheap side to begin with I wouldn't want to stress them anymore..

Yes, forum sources. I'd like to go this route but taking a cheap rim (XXR) and powdercoating worries me. If the general consensus is that this is fine then I'd probably like to go this way..

I would suggest you do some actual research in to it, and make your own decision.
Having said that, I have had multiple items powdercoated and the only thing I can say is it has always looked good and been easy to maintain. Nothing but benefits IMO. (Brake calipers on multiple cars, wheels, one cars rear IRS cradle.... lots of stuff.) |
