AI is a funny term. Anyway, my point was not that for a given production car, that a program can drive it around the track faster than the fastest race driver. My point was that given a car that can exceed the limits of human drivers, a program can still drive the car well. With enough development, a program can definitely exceed the best driver's ability. Think of how a missile can hit another missile. The complexity of that is far greater and at far faster a pace than anything that happens in F1.

And I'd totally go for a computer-controlled race league.

The problem with an AI series is that the computers wouldn't make mistakes, and could drive every lap at the limit based on available data (fuel consumption, tire wear, traffic, etc).

Every race would be decided by qualifying order and if the car survived without a mechanical failure.

F1 is in a constant struggle with promoting the latest technology for speed, and making it both safe for the drivers and maintaining exciting racing.

Two out of 3 they can usually get right. One of the biggest problems they've had is the rear aerodynamics and air coming off the back of the cars can seriously affect the downforce on cars behind, making passing very difficult, so on turns they will either slide out a bit or have to slow down.

Having said that, there are still major technologies that are getting to road cars, and F1 as a research tool is a great benefit.

I agree, there was just so much more spirit of competition back then. Now it's all politicized, compromised, and standardized.

Speaking of Ayrton Senna, I love the tribute Top Gear did for him many years ago:

they need to just make a no-holds-barred series with no salary caps. let ferrari, mclaren, mercedes, redbull, just duke it out. run whatever tire you want. rotary, pistons, turbos, na, v12, v6, whatever. only common variable would be that everyone needs to run the same fuel.

just think of all the new technology this kind of competition would bring in

You left out the part about being forced to be somewhat environmentally conscientious. Hence the outlawed refueling and hybrid junk that's been forced on them. We can thank Jean Todt for all of this.
