Yes, yes it does. The ECU uses the MAF curve to calculate a bunch of things including AFR. But Speed Density is an alternative to the MAF sensor. Speed Density is not restricted by a MAF sensor 0-5V range, so you can tune it no matter how many grams of air you're pushing into the engine.

Speed density is based on intake air pressure and temperature.

MAF tuning is based on the actual grams of air going into the engine, but all sensors have a range to read. Once you go FI and push say 14+ PSI, the MAF sensor will go to 5V and not read anymore.

You can increase the MAF sensor window for tuning by increasing the size of the intake pipe, but you will still max it out at some point and need SD to keep tuning for higher PSI.
