Mike used FTW E99 fuel to make that glory run which he's so proud of.

It looks taped in. You also can tune via speed density without a MAF sensor. You would use this method of tuning when the MAF becomes a restriction in the intake. MAF tuning is better for a wider range of climates that is why OEM's use it.

It isn't new nor restricted to the 86 I am afraid. It is just way easier now to get this sort of crap spread around then it used to be.
