Also had to pull the engine to get to them.

I have no idea what nissan was thinking when they crammed that engine in that tiny ass engine bay.. made it the biggest PITA to work on

That's not my point at all. My point is that, in my vast experience working with young people, MANY have a very unrealistic view of their own indestructibility and many do not consider the effect of their actions on others around them; their "sphere" is a lot smaller than it will be as they mature and begin to see larger and larger pictures of life. It's not a slam... it's just part of the maturation process.

The examples you site above illustrate your point well, but have very little to do with my point. Military personnel and heavy machine operators are operating, usually, under very strict guidelines, oversight by superiors (much more so than the odd traffic cop on the highway for civilians) and have had a great deal of training. None of that can be said for a 17 year old on public highways in his first car.

I agree.. it's definitely not a "kids these days" issue... it's just kids since time immemorial. The self vs. others view hasn't progressed as far is it will later in life to them, that's all.

I wasn't referring to the person behind the wheel as a "death machine," I was referring to the machine itself.. the car. We ALL drive machines capable of killing us and others in an instant. It is up to us to treat them as such, respect their awesome abilities both positive and intensely negative, and be ever mindful of our actions. Again, that is increasingly the province of maturity.

I like you, man... this is the first time I think we've disagreed. I feel bad. I hope some of what I said makes some sense.

Oh... you and I are two years apart. I'll let you guess which way!

Best to you,

Barry

No problem here.

I'm 19 recently got a BRZ, it's good you should get one, drive it how you like (within legal speed limits) and smart. I'm going to track the car to have more fun with it legally. I'd suggest you do the same if you want to have fun. Don't get tempted to race though, unless you want your car destroyed. (I live in Cali). And like what I always tell everyone, buy a dashcam. lol

Honestly, the car you pick as your first car will be way less influential than how you do your initial car-training.

As soon as you've got your license, I would go straight to a performance driving school and start getting edumacated. Start with a defensive driving / new driver's clinic type thing. The title makes it sound boring (which makes it easy to sell the idea to your parents!) but really they'll be teaching you the basics of how to drive fast (since to drive fast, you need to drive well!)-- threshold braking, skid pad, controlling the car during emergency scenarios, basic car maintenance stuff that affects performance and safety (like the importance of having good tyres set to correct pressures), etc.

You'll also get to drive various cars which are not yours and you don't have to fix if they break, which can maybe help give you an idea of what kind of car you'll actually want to drive. If you have a selection available, pick a school that has cars you think are potentially interesting, and use it as an opportunity to see if you like them!

Once you've done the "safety" school, you can go back and do some performance driving clinics as well. As you move up to more performance-oriented courses, the cars tend to get more interesting as well.

Anyway, just my two cents. Some quality training and a less-pricey car will be a way better investment than spending a bunch on a BRZ. Of course, if you can swing doing both, do both! But try the school experience first, cause it will teach you how to actually use more of a car's potential, which is the only way you can really tell if you like a car or not.
