I think the BRZ is a great car, and would have been best if I had gotten it at 24ish than anytime later. But for a 17 year old, let me say congrats if this is what you can get at this age!

These cars are very fun and safe, so long as you aren't too headstrong and think you're smarter than real world physics (ie don't slide off into a ditch because going too fast).

Make sure you can afford the insurance on these cars before jumping ahead and getting the car. My insurance at ~25 years old was still only affordable enough; at a younger age it might be impossible without an established driving record insured in my name for more than a year or so.

It's a big responsibility to keep a car like this in order. For every 15k miles you will need a tire change, getting the brakes and stuff inspected, and following all the other regular interval maintenance. These cars wear faster than normal cars so its important to stay on top of the maintenance.

That's all I got to say, hope you can join the fam!

In terms of safety, take a look at the crash thread on the FR-S section of the forum. I'm too lazy to link it right now since I'm on my phone, but there's a few mangled twins that people have walked away from.

Also, definitely try and drive something else. This car is fun and has enough power for a first sports car, but try and see if you want more power. I only ask that if you do get something with more power, don't do anything stupid.

Considering that money is out of the equation, a twin would be an amazing first car.

Not only are running costs really low, the car is reliable, easy to drive and fun at low speeds. Even if in a minor accident its parts aren't overly expensive (assuming you don't bust one of the HID headlights) and it has the highest safety rating from around the world.

I think its an ideal car to grow with both as a driver, but also from a maintenance perspective as the car really is built like a giant Meccano set. Provided you are patient and follow DYI guides etc you will find it easy and fun doing some of the basic mods yourself and general maintenance.

I did my own oil change and filter at around the 1600km mark and was blown away with how simple it was. Especially after the joy of doing the Nissan Maxima one ie having to twist the wheel all the way right, take off an inner guard, twist off a tiny side mounded filter after draining the oil. Man what a messy pain.

To me it makes jack shit what your parents get you. Whether you get $1k or $30k you are not making the payments, so it means jack shit. Be glad your getting a car.

Just because he's young doesn't mean his parents are buying his car. I bought my frs at 19 and pay for my car and insurance myself.

Driving it as a "normal" car there is no way in this world you will need tires every 15K miles and nothing will wear any faster than any other car on the road. It is just a car made like all the rest out there and will stand up just as well if driven the same.

He actually did say that his dad will be paying for it...

Regardless, he doesn't seem to acting all elitist and condescending about it. He wants the car to drive it, not show it off.

At 17 I highly think he's not paying for it.
I bought my first car at 19 as well. But it wasn't some $24k car. It was little $5k '95 Suzuki esteem beater car. Payed it off in over 2 1/2 years. I could have got a $20k car but I'll would not have anything left over.
I was paying $140 with insurance a month. Drove all over western part of the U.S. And Mexico.
Might have an ugly car but it was reliable, cheap and could stuff it wth girls/friends and had enough money left over to party.

Even though I am going to be putting in about $3000 of my own, that's not really that huge of a portion of the cost.

Damn, when I was 17 I had my grandmas 91 ford tempo.. Honestly I despise kids who's parents buy them brand new cars, because I feel you don't appreciate things as much when they are just given to you. That is today's American youth though the give me generation.

I also didn't read this thread so I dunno if OP is in this boat, I'm just saying what I think about that.

I'm also 28 now.

Some parents just want their kids to be happy. Must be a reason why he's getting such a great car at such a young age aside from being spoiled.

Yeah, guess it just hits a nerve for most of us without well off parents. But must be great, I think.

Anyways, is it a decent first car? I'm a responsible kid and wouldn't push its limits.
If you don't know how to be responsibly irresponsible, this car is not for you.(edit)...or, like you say, you are actually a responsible adult that would never do anything "crazy" in a sports car.

I've talked with Subaru dealers and they talk about how "kids come looking to get their destroyed bumper replaced" without their parents finding out because they tried drifting in an irresponsible time at an irresponsible place.

I promised myself I would drive like my mom before I was blessed to receive such a great car from my parents. This car is almost too much fun, and it took two wipe outs, a narrow lane s-drift (slide) into a parking lot, and 2 uncontrollable drifts within the first 2 months to understand (99.5%) how this car handles in dry and wet weather (never got a scratch).

I'm not saying you aren't ready for such a car, just that if you ever get the itch to do something irresponsible, make sure you have a ton of space and you can clearly see that no one is within a good 20 seconds of where you are. Better yet, take it to the track.
