Driving in Japan is not exactly fun, most of the time. Keep the FR-S in the states, buy lots of GT-86 parts. Getting those parts back here will be an issue, though.

If you are driving around downtown tokyo to shop or what then it is better to take the train. I love drivng in japan, hakone is only a little over 1 hr away. Parts should not be a problem to ship back. I know many people including my self that have brought car parts back.

I spent 3 years in Yokosuka ('03-'06) and in hindsight really wish I had bought something fun to drive while there. Driving in Japan is easy in a RH drive car, but trickier in a LH. We left our car in storage and it never ran quite right after we got back and wasn't worth what I hoped it would be. So from my experience, sell it and buy something over there that you can't get here.

Also, sending parts home is easy since shipping from an FPO address is the same as shipping within the U.S.

And have fun over there. They were three of the best years of my life!

i am stationed in japan but not mainland like you will be. ill be rotating back to the states soon and will miss okinawa. enjoy your time out there. as a previous car salesman, i would recommend that you sell your car like others have said due to depreciating values. stock up on parts while you're there for whatever project you have back home. They should be able to ship your parts back to the states for free along with your personal belongings. That's what i aim to do soon. did your branch of service provide you an allowance for moving your vehicle or are they providing you opportunities to bring a vehicle back to the states from japan? Sadly, i dont have that privilege out here or else i would be driving a fun car instead of my minivan beater.

Mainland has different rules for bringing a car to japan than okinawa. Depends on rank as well.

Take pictures if you can. Try to find other yellow 86s.
