Exhaust/ Front Pipe Question

Okay, I'm a noob when it comes to cars but I'm learning from you guys...I have an invidia n1 cat...wanted the buddy club spec 2 because its loud but it was a single exit so got the invidia n1. So I want a front pipe next, then the headers. What is the loudest/ best sounding front pipe out there for a college student budget? Now the noob part, what can I legally have so I can pass the emissions test still? From Illinois...so Illinois is pretty strict in the Chicago suburbs. So I guess I'm asking to pass emissions do I need catted or cat less frontpipe/ headers? If that makes sense lol. Thanks in advance. #BBQ

Look up your local laws. It is probably more relaxed than California. We don't have to take a emissions test until 5-6 years after the date of sale. So don't worry about it for a few years.
With that said, if you tamper(change) anything related to emissions, it is technically illegal.

If you want power and noise, get a header.
If you want noise for cheap, replace the front pipe.
I would get the header first.

J2 test pipe is cheapest option for an okay fp. Little bigger then stock as well.

Pretty sure if you get caught tampering or changing the cat it's a 5,000 dollar fine. That being said I have a high flow catted front pipe from berk that increases the sound slightly. The cheapest option would be a test pipe which has no cat at all those are pretty loud. Easy way to pass emissions is just to keep stock parts and swap them out when going for emissions testing. But if you didn't want to swap then getting a catted frontpipe and headers would be the safest route. But be prepared to pay about 300 more when buying a catted header vs uncatted.

Illinois doesn't have visual inspection as far as I know. At least not down here near St Louis.

As long as you have the CEL tuned out and every system check registers correctly you will pass. I have had multiple cars without cats pass. All they ever do is hook up an OBD II scanner and if it pulls clean you're good. They don't even do a sniffer / dyno test anymore.

You shouldn't need to worry about finding the loudest front pipe. They're all relatively the same volume wise. Also, when you install a header with that setup you're gonna be insanely loud.

Instead of starting another thread, I decided to post here because it sounds like im in the same boat as @chitownbrz. Looking to invest in a new exhaust setup. I have been specifically looking at JDL parts. Im a little confused on the "catted" parts (headers and front pipe" vs non-catted. I recently moved to MA so they have emissions testings so obviously im looking to pass.
For example im looking to invest the JDL un catted header because from what I have read having a catted header reduces potential performance. Does that mean then I have to invest in a catted front pipe? can i have a JDL uncatted header with the rest of the exhaust system being stock?
Hopefully someone can school me on this.

You'll probably fail a sniffer test even with a high flow cat set-up most likely(opinions on this do vary, so YMMV). I believe where I live, is a sniffer and OBD test. But, new cars are exempt for 7 years, then after that I think it's every 2 years I need a test. For me, I can swap a header in about an hour, so it's not a huge deal for me to swap over whenever a test comes up.

A catted front pipe won't save you from failing the test. Your best bet is to get just a header, as that's where the biggest gains will come from. Add a catback for sound if you want. From what I recall, a front pipe is good for a few HP and TQs.

There's tons of info on here. Id suggest reading through the Basic Bolt-Ons guide that's stickied in this section. You'll learn a ton, and then be able to decide what to do from there.

You just killed all your options. Only stock is legal.
