Should I sell my FRS...

Owned it for 18 months now, car has about 12k miles and 3 track days.

Of those 12k miles, ~4k have been road trip miles as my commute is 5 miles per day so I just don't use it a lot. Also I live in the midwest so there are 0 fun and twisty roads around. Track days are fun but I'd rather spend that money elsewhere at this stage of my life (late 20s). Another thing I regret is getting a Scion, in professional settings car talk often comes up and people always crack a joke about Scions and loud exhausts, it's not an image I want. I disagree with this but such is life. If I had a collector's garage I'd keep the FRS and just stare at it because it is a sexy car.

I feel like I use my car as point A to point B so it's a complete waste to have an FRS for it and I'd be much better off financially with something else. My monthly payment is only $300 but I've been thinking about getting a cheap e46 because 99% of the time my car is not being tracked.

Maybe I'm just getting bored with it as I've sold my last 3 cars after 2 years of ownership.

Should I sell or am I being crazy?

To me the FRS is a cheap commuter car. That's how I use mine 99% of the time.

Put Toyota badges on it and call it a Toyota if it bugs you. I did because I am a Scion brand hater.

You're not crazy. Sell it and become a lion tamer, or shoes salesman....or a lawyer that only litigates shoe accidents involving lion tamers. Also invest all your savings into Enron or anything to do with the vinyl record industry. I have inside info that both are going to make a huge comeback! And most importantly, never take personal advice about selling your FR-S from a bunch of weirdos who salivate over the car so much and all hang out talking about the car every day. P.S. - Never put salt in your eyes.

It's sad but this partially played into my decision to jump ship too. Not because I personally care about the stigma that goes along with scion generally, but I felt it was very out of place in professional settings.

Might of helped if I didn't get such a flashy color and mods too. That topped with needing more room and a car that didn't need multiple sets of tires and could be driven year round, ultimately led to me jumping ship.

Like you I will always love the car, just need something better suited for me. Unfortunately, appearance matters in my field, even frivolous things such as the car one drives.

I hope to in the future, when I am better settled in, to pick up a used one for a track/weekend car. But until then the WRX will have to do (for this reason, and in general I actually prefer the newer models more reserved-non gaudy appearance).

Its really up to you. We can tell you yes or no, but it all on you.

This is my 99% commute car and I love it. First manual, and first Sport car. Love every moment with it so far. I don't plan to track it anytime soon, but I do want to turn it to a Show car or something close to it at least, cause its a beautiful car stock and even better when adding the correct mods and parts to it.

You get what you pay for my friend. A lot of chose to buy or lease this vehicle because it was a cheap RWD/performance oriented car that you can trash around in the canyons/track too

Not sure how much you can get off your car if you decide to sell, but it's definitely not something I want to think about...(resales on these are pretty damn low )

A couple things..

1. The cheapest car to own is the one you already have, no matter WHAT car it is.. unless you own some exotic that's costing you thousands of dollars every month to fix and maintain.

2. Selling your car will cost you money. Explain, you say.. OK, I will. Your car is worth more to you than it is to anyone else because you've already paid x amount of dollars for it. What you've already paid plus what you'll get for it will not add up to your original purchase price plus all those lovely fees (taxes, tags, documentation, dealer extortion, etc.); most likely, it'll come up short by thousands. Those thousands could have been better spent in getting the most out of the car you have.

3. You seem worried about how other people view the fact that you drive a Scion. Maybe it's time to stop worrying about stupid stuff.. no offense. Worry about how things you do may harm other folks, taking care of your friends and family, the future of your country, etc... those things are worthy of your consideration. How others (except for your wife or parents if you're still somewhat dependent upon them) view your choice of car (including me) shouldn't even register on ANY scale of "things that matter."

4. About the only thing you typed that, at least to me, IS a justification for making a change is your musings that you might just be bored with the FR-S. Could be. Driving straight roads is pretty boring, no matter WHAT you're driving, at least to me. Maybe you need to move? In all seriousness, if you really don't dig the FR-S for your OWN reasons, and it's worth taking a hit of $5000 or more to sell it and buy another car (remember, taxes and fees you've already paid that you won't recoup plus depreciation, and THEN taxes and fees on the car you'll have to buy to replace it, blah blah) there's nothing stopping you.

Personally, if I was going to be driving boring roads, I'd just as soon do it in a car that gets great gas mileage and has some fun factor. The FR-S works for me just fine. I guess there's something to be said for sitting in a quiet car that feels like you're home in your living room recliner, listening to your favorite tunes in relative tranquility, but that's never been my taste in driving. Everyone's different. Do what YOU want, assuming you can do so in a financially responsible manner.

I'm 50, a professional, a director at my firm, I drive a Scion lowered,with header and exhaust, am in professional settings all the time with people who drive what they perceive as a nicer car than mine. when I tell them I drive a Scion they give me the polite nod. Then usually after our meetings we go back to our cars and it's the same reaction all the time, disbelief when they see the car. Now they want to know more. All I ever tell them is that there are 2 types of drivers. Those that have a car to get from point A to B. Those that actually enjoy getting from point A-B. The FRS is one of the cheapest platforms if you actually like driving. Please note that I also have a Mercedes and a brand new Lexus IS300 and never had a compliment on either one of those cars. I say who cares what others think and if you enjoy the car and it gives you vigor and enthusiasm. Keep it! FYI. The older you become the less most things actually excite you.

It sounds like you've answered your own question within asking it. If you're going to look at a car primarily as a means of getting from point A to point B and it being efficient for you financially, then yes - an FR-S, or any sports car, is not the car to suit you.

Sports cars aren't practical, and therefore you should expect to take a hit by owning one financially in some regard - the price tag, the fuel economy, etc - but the trade off is that it's something you're passionate about, and it is thrilling or fulfilling to you in some way.

If it's something you're liable to get bored with quickly (especially given your history of car ownership), then my opinion is that selling the FR-S is probably the option that will best suit your current feelings and situation.

You can put Toyota badges on it but its still a Scion... Or wait is it already a Toyota? Or is it actually a Subaru? Wait no, scratch that, it's a Scibaryota, right? Right?!

I understand where you're coming from, I'm in my late 20's as well - but at a certain point in time you need to develop thick skin and stop caring about what others think. If a Scion / FR-S is "loud" what does that make a Mustang?

Why should anyone else's thoughts about the car affect YOUR enjoyment of the vehicle?

It'd be one thing if you were driving some sort of shit-box as that can reflect poorly on you in a professional setting - but you're driving a good looking, well-performing car - I have found that letting the naysayers drive the car or confidently explaining its design history usually gives them a new found appreciation for the vehicle.

To each their own though, some people can't help but get stuck in the cycle of keeping up with the Jonses...

Your reason for getting rid of the car because of cost is valid, I haven't had my car for that long or really done anything with it (other than reverts some mods to stock) and have spent more than I initially thought I would... But it comes with the territory of driving a sports car. If the maintenance is something you're not fully committed to, then maybe you would be better off with a luxury vehicle and / or true economic car (Accord, etc.).

(Just my two cents, take it as you will, good luck with whatever you choose to do!)

If you sell or do not sell (or do anything for that matter), because what someone else thinks or see; you will regret it. If you like the car, keep it; if there is something out there better for you, sell it and buy that instead.

Yeah...you can always slap the Toyota Emblem on it or you know...BRZ

You should sell it then find something that makes you happy, get a 240sx its also light weight and RWD an E46 is bad ass too.

They're probably jealous and trying to take you down to their level cause they don't have a FRS/BRZ/GT86.

Well from what I seen thats how it is and they usually drive a "VTEC" Honda/Integra or so they call it, thats way to loud going 20mph.

But its still your choice in the end lol the E46 is neat also!
