rattle/knocking sound while parked/ in drive

automatic brz

I get this knocking/rattling sound coming from the engine bay when im in traffic(2~7mph) and mostly on a slight incline(windows fully closed/up and I can hear it!)

Also occurs when im parked at random times(windows down I can hear it). No check engine light, been observing this for past 1 month!

Any ideas?

always seems to be incurring off and on when on even the slightest incline

I have my laptop connected(inverter connected to cig lighter port) and phones being charged

Have someone stand outside while you take off to pinpoint it further. Do they hear it? I had similar but it turns out it was my brakes as I eased off pedal. Freaked me out.

yeah my co-workers hear it and some random guy on the street was like "i think you need to change your oil"

I changed my oil 2 weeks ago but the same noise has been here for 1 month+(been driving with my windows down more often)

only happens in low rpm range(idle to 2-7 mph). When parked and I hear it, i just rev the engine a bit and its gone

I could only guess from the video, but two things popped in my head. the easiest to check would be your tensioner arm/pulley, worse case scenario rocker/lifter issue

I have a rattle as well on cold starts. Goes away completely whenever the car warms up. Pretty embarrassing.

others have posted similar videos around here. That is some type of rod knock. Its coming from inside the engine and could be bad news. I'll check around here for similar sound post

from brz manual

●You may occasionally notice light knocking for a short time while accelerating
or driving uphill. This is normal and there is no need for concern.

I will drive in to dealer tomorrow, i hope they have "time" to see me as I have been trying my hardest to find dealers who have time to answer a phone call and actually be on the line.

I been doing my own maintenance myself, oil changes (i buy the filter from dealer shops) and have receipts of the transactions with dates stamped.

I actually just dropped it off today, I talked to the tech guy and he said thats knocking. He said my knocking appears to be coming in and out (not always knocking which is true) So i dont know if thats good news or bad for this current situation.

Manager asking me if i changed oil or not, I have 11961 miles on the clock giving them the keys. I have receipts for 2 oil filters from June 2014(4500 miles) and 2015 October(10k miles). He wants me to get receipts for the oils as well with the weight of oil included in them(I pay cash for these but I can easily get the receipts as i know the owner and exact date of oil change). All so i can avoid paying 660 dollars for a teardown. So far I left the car in their hands and ill be processing my receipts for me to send to them.

I do not have receipts for January oil change(January 2015) as i did this in another state and threw away everything when i moved out(paid all in cash) but shouldnt the 2 confirmed oil changes be reason enough i change my oil every 7.5 months? I got my car on November 2013(I think this same exact date as today)

Try adding an upgraded clutch, a supercharger, aftermarket suspension and solid mounts for engine/trans/diff; so many weird sounds come and go it makes me so damn paranoid

the one from June 2014 would be sufficient as per manual you would still be within acceptable oil change intervals from your 4k oil change
