I have the 4.88 gears from Weir. Bought all the parts Spencer suggested and the local shop I used had the job done in 1 day. Spencer was a stand up guy and they will stand behind their products.
10 days for a ring and pinion swap is outrageous! Based on what I've read above, your shop is 100% of your problem. PS anyone in socal doing this swap PM me if you need a good diff shop.

UPDATE
UPDATE:
Took the car to a trusted mechanic last night. Almost immediately upon driving he said "wow that's really messed up. That will destroy itself in short order if you keep driving on it." Which is crazy because the first shop said "oh it's fine long term. There's no risk to driving it. It will just be noisy." So here is the game plan. I will drop it off at this new shop where they will drop the pumpkin, take the back cover off and get some pictures, and we will ship it off to weir performance. Weir will tear it apart and get me an inspection report. I will use all of this evidence to come back to the original shop and get my money back. Last night I put in an official dispute with the credit card company and gave them all of my evidence. I just so happen to work with two attorneys (I'm an engineer, but we have attorney's that work for us) who have been providing me with legal advice. It appears as though I have a really strong case, and should it need to go to small claims court, I believe I can win. I plan on getting back all of the money I've paid this shop, and then some extra to replace and parts they F'd up during the install. Specne's exact words when I talked to him yesterday "I talked to the shop you had do that work...they didn't want to listen to anything I had to say." |

Plug & Play. Maybe do a short cycle on the lubricant but the mag plug is quite effective.

There's a gearing difference in the transmission between manual and automatic. For the manual guys, they seem to say 4.88 is as much as you'd want. For the auto guys, I've heard the 4.88 is awesome, but the car can afford even more gear.
When in doubt, DON'T FEAR THE GEAR. (aka. if you're on the fence, go with the higher gearing)
