Time for a service, then time to hit a racetrack again

As an experiment, I've sourced some parts from Subaru instead of Toyota with very encouraging results...

In the front of the photo, part 803916010 is the crushable sump plug washer. This is a very common service part for an 86 because it must be replaced with every oil change. On Tuesday, I went to Imperial Toyota Nelspruit, and they had none in stock - whaat? So I ordered 5. On Thursday I went to pick up the parts, and was told that only 2 had arrived - whaat? So then the dumb spares counterjumper went to find them and could only find one - whaat? So, I took the one washer, cost R11.89. Bloody idiots, and they wonder why I don't support them.

Anyway, then I went to Subaru Nelspruit and asked them if they have the equivalent part. Yep, in stock, so I took five at the princely price of R5 each incl. That's 42% of the Toyota price - whaat? And that's exactly how you lose a customer forever - it's a matter of principle.

So I decided to explore this avenue a bit further...

Left middle in the photo, part 26696AG031 is Subaru rear brake pads for a standard spec 86. In stock, off the shelf at R1071.36 incl at Subaru Nelspruit. The last Toyota price comparison I have is on 08 May 2014 part SU00304096 at R1570.36 incl. So Subaru today is 68% of Toyota's price a year and a half ago - whaat? Last price I have from Powerbrake for Bendix rear pads (Aug 2015) is R1584.60 incl plus shipping.

Left bottom in the photo, part 26296SC011 is Subaru front brake pads for a standard spec 86. I've decided to give them a try because Toyota stock pads aren't bad, they just need lots of pedal pressure because they lack bite. Also in stock at Subaru Nelspruit, off the shelf at R1626.56 incl. I've never bought front pads from Toyota so I'd be interested if someone's got a price. My last price from Powerbrake for MX72/PB05 front pads (Aug 2015) was R2722.32 incl plus shipping.

Sure, I get a good deal from the local Subaru guys (you don't get what you deserve, you get what you can negotiate an'all) but there's some serious price differences there - phew!!

Gonna be interesting to see how the brake pads perform...

Quoting my earlier post in another thread, and some more price info...

Just for interest's sake, I got a brake pads quote from Toyota (NTT Barberton)
Toyota Barberton - total R3867 front R2241 rear R1626
Subaru Nelspruit - total R2698 front R1627 rear R1071
Powerbrake - total R4451 front R2722 rear R1585 shipping R144

I'll be fitting the Subaru pads tomorrow, and I'll probably be on track this weekend then I can see how they perform.

Entertainingly enough I did a similar price comparison a last year with air filters. Now while most are running AFe, K&N, Blitz filters I'm a stickler for stock and was utterly horrified when I was quoted just under R600 excl. VAT from multiple dealerships.

I then got clever and phone Subaru (Bruma at the time and Bryanston last time) and both times R283 incl. VAT. I jumped at the opportunity and bought two last time. The fun part is that it is a genuine Toyota Denso filter inside a Subaru box. How Toyota justifies such pricing is quite unbelievable.

PS: I understand this is the same filter as used on the Toyota RunX RSI...

I serviced my car today which I do every 7500kms.
I alternate between doing engine oil and supercharger oil, or engine oil and gearbox and diff oil.

Today was engine oil and supercharger oil.
I trolled both lots of old oil with a strong magnet and nada - both engine and supercharger were 100% clear of any metal bits.

I'm thrilled.
I've done 23 track days with my car so far and I seriously abuse it, so I have a conscience.
But again, it's told me that it's not made of glass as long as I keep it fed with quality fluids and don't do anything really stoopid.

I took a drive across to Barberton this morning to have my gearbox and diff oil changed. What a pleasant experience. As usual, NTT Toyota Barberton were excellent in every respect. I've been dealing with NTT Barberton for 3 years now, and cannot praise them enough. Great people, great service, good pricing. I was out of their workshop and on my way back home before 8:30 this morning, and the invoice in my pocket was substantially lighter than expected.

I am going to change gear box and Diff oil tomorrow at Imperial Toyota Strijdom park,

I bought 4L of Motul Gear 300 today,

May I ask how much Toyota charged you for the labor ?

What gearbox and Diff fluid did you use?

It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes, usually its R700/h labour.

Motul 300 is good for the gearbox, but I wouldn't use it for the diff which needs special oil for limited slip.

See this which specifically says not for LSD - https://www.motul.com/za/en/products...gear-300-75w90

An oil suitable for LSD will cost you R400+/500ml (and you need 3 - 1.2Lt about). But your diff rarely needs oil. You've only done a few track days - I wouldn't worry about diff oil now. I've just done my first diff oil change after 24 track days and 66000 kms.

No. But talk to me on Sunday.
Should be about half an hour, say R300-400. Without diff, say R200-300.

Thanks didn't think about that,

The reason why I bought Motul300 for Gearbox and Diff was because of this thread:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19218

Per manual
*API GL-3 fluid for the transmission 2.2L
*API GL-5 fluid for the differential 1.3L

The Gear 300 is GL-4/GL-5

http://www.motul.com/system/product_...pdf?1303320907

Differential takes GL-5
Transmission takes GL-3 or GL-4

Will do a little more research and provide feedback from Toyota SA

Here you are, a few posts down in that thread...

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...77&postcount=3

But then, further down in post 6, someone says it doesn't matter.
I'm not sure now.

Toyota differentiates between LSD and non-LSD, and the LSD oil is the one they use for the 86.
