M2 is less than 100 lb lighter than an M4. So really, what's the point?

Length, width, and the resulting handling. But yes, it's a bummer BMW can't make a light car.

The M4 weighs 3530 lbs.

According to BMW, the M2 should weigh around 3295 lbs. Still a bit heavy but ~235 lbs. lighter than an M4, along with smaller overall dimensions.

I've said it on another forum, but Idk, at this point the amount of "M" models is kind of out of control. Is there really a need to have an M version of every car they make? It kind of detracts from the essence of what the car is to me.

Haha didn't mean it like that! I just begin to wonder why even produce a "normal" line if there is a performance model of almost every model they offer. Again, just pondering!

That's a European weight figure, which may or may not be a dry weight. The official weight stated by BMW for the USA is 3450 for the manual transmission model; 3505 for the DCT. An M4 is 23-135 lb heavier depending on transmissions compared.

Yeah they really said "f*ck it" when they started building M versions of the X5 and X6. Ultimate form of brand whoring and cheapening of a division steeped in motorsports legend. They're still holding the line and refuse to build a M7 which is a good thing. Though honestly if they ever make an M version of the X1 I'll have completely given up on them.

An X1 M would sell like hotcakes. They're fools for not making one.

Ah I hadn't seen the 3450 lbs curb weight figure before. That's surprisingly heavy then for the US spec M2.

To me, as long as they keep producing the M3/M4 (and now M2 since every model has gotten so big), it doesn't really bother me what other M cars they come out with.

If there's enough demand for the other M variants, it would be strange not to sell them right?

I see two sets of numbers floating about. Either way, 100-200 lbs is not a big difference for the size difference, but it is a lot more than a twin.

I would get a focus RS, smoke the M2 everywhere I go (similar power, less weight and AWD) and have enough room for family and luggage. And if you argue the M2 is more prestige, the focus RS is just as exclusive since it is first time that North America gets it.

All M models, except the E30, have all been in that ballpark in weight, or more. E36, E46, E90 (more) and the current models, none of them has been "light".

You actually have a point. Off the top of my head, if I were to buy a BMW, past or present, the only one in recent history id consider would be the Z4M Coupe. IMO, everything is ugly and rubbish.

For $51K, I'd take the new Audi TTS over the M2. Only weighs 3200 lb., has better fuel economy, better (IMHO) tech and interior. Has less power, but sorta makes it up with AWD. Still wouldn't buy either but if I had to choose I'd pick the Audi.

Now the next TTRS, that one should be a beast..
