Coilovers ?

Hi All. Those with coilovers, do the settings drift, requiring "frequent" adjustments etc.
Need this info to help decide between coilovers or springs.
Thanks

I am looking at coilovers / springs options in South Africa and found the following:

1. Import springs (Eibach) myself - Cost around R5k - R6k after shipping and import duties

2. RMS Supplies Eibach Springs for around R6k- R7k as well

(IMO rather get coilovers, as the springs are not value for ZAR (Rand) money)

3. ISC coilovers - R9200 (Torque Racing) with free shipping SA wide

4. BC BR Coilovers I contacted BC in Capetown and they gave me the following options:

R 11 600 BC BR RS

R 12 500 BC BR RA

R 13 500 BC BR RH

http://www.bcec.com.tw/products/products.html

I tried googling/researching the BC BR Options for the Toyota 86 but they do not have detail of the RS / RA and RH options.
@Die$eL do you know which version (Ie. RS/RA or RH) of BC BR coilovers you have on your 86?

Anyone else fitted the BC BR Coilovers in SA?

Thanks

My advice must be - none of the above.

The 86's stock suspension is amazing. Just do crash bolts to get some negative camber.
It's not going to make you any faster on track or on the road.
You're more likely to make it perform worse than make it perform better.

Unless you're just going after aesthetics, and performance doesn't matter...

My suspension is 100% stock (except crash bolts), and that how it's going to stay.

Agreed, my primary reason for coilovers is aesthetics

(Due to getting a little bored with the stock look)

I am also looking into wider 17inch rims and thicker tyres,
Thanks

Nice test between coilovers vs tires:

If you're doing it only for looks the Eibach lowering springs I think are great value compared to coil overs. Once you have height set on coilovers how you want you'll unlikely change it and only be adjusting the firmness.

The 25mm spacers rear and 20mm front or 25mm all around would complete a nice lowered look for cheap. Like these http://www.redlineperformance.co.nz/...-5-x-100-25mm/

I've got BC BR Type RA on my Forester - very happy with them and they don't need readjusting. I do set them to their softest setting for offroad and then back to plenty clicks for the road. Adjusting ride height is a mission and a half so it's not something you'd want to do often. Same with pre-load - set it once and leave it.

There are plenty options but BC is imported and supported by Pyro so I know getting parts/rebuild kits will never be an issue. Plus if it's good enough for the Michelin Cup leaders then it's definitely good enough for me.

I will 100% disagree with this, where is your basis for this? a good upgraded suspension and proper alignment will make the car faster on a track.

I'm not sure which version of the BC mine are. I have the box in storage. Will check and update.

I drove a 86 with stock suspension for the first time this week and the ride isn't much softer than mine.

The BC suspension is much more rigid though. No body roll at all.

I am of the opinion that GOOD quality PROPERLY SETUP coilovers will make you faster around a track, all else equal.

The stock 86 suspension is EXCELLENT no doubt, and I am still far away from its full potential but once I feel I have reached that point, I will start looking at coilovers.

I think coilovers are given a bad name when they are set too low and aren't setup properly or as just a junk quality set in general.

I feel that coilovers are far from just an aesthetics mod.

My 2c

How did you find the coilovers effecting the wheel travel on the Fozzy - if at all?
That would be my only concern on undulating surfaces, that the wheel cant "droop" down enough to gain traction.

I totally agree.
I didn't bite the previous poster because he said that.
I bit him because he's a troll with a history of challenging almost everything.

The reality is that most coilover installations don't result in a handling improvement for the variety of reasons you've stated.

Most noobs think that fitting coilovers guarantees better handling which is far from the truth.

At Red Star, Jacques Stiglet is a few secs faster than me, and I wanted to find out where.

I assumed it was (1) his experience as a professional racecar driver, (2) their coilovers (ohlins) vs my stock suspension, (3) that they had more power than me (their demo car maybe had some private tweaks), (4) that they had more power than me due to using lots of expensive Torco vs me using a bit of cheap Liqui Moly OB, and (5) that I make more mistakes.

I did very detailed comparisons and found that I could eliminate the power items 3 & 4 because our acceleration and speed were identical. I found that item 5 is (obviously) a factor, but interestingly, both him and I made a mistake in the specific best laps I compared. I found that I could eliminate suspension (item 2) because our cornering speeds (apex and exit) were almost identical. In some cases I was a little bit faster or vice-versa, but absolutely minimal differences. The only real difference came down to his bravery which doubtless comes from his skill and professional experience. He brakes a fraction later than me and therefore stays WOT that fraction longer on the straights, whereas I might complete my braking 5m or 10m earlier than necessary and then "coast" for a fraction of a second, or slightly overbrake. He avoids that "waste", and with 13 corners in a 2m20 lap, a quarter of a second going into each corner adds up to the 3 secs he's quicker than me.

Are their Ohlins setup properly - dunno, but I'm not yet convinced they're any faster than my stock suspension. We'll see in future what happens.

not a troll at all and I challenge a lot of things posted here because they are flat out wrong, most peoples opinions here come from people who have never built or tracked anything and came from economy cars. and it is completely foolish to think that the stock suspension on these cars is the fastest suspension, my car is faster on my coilovers and alignment.
