So I bought a BRZ 2 days ago. I have officially joined the fold. Since then I have put 700 miles on it. Driven 3 different canyons and taken it on a short road trip. Loving the car. Definitely happy with my purchase. So how does it stack up to the genesis.

In a nut shell, just as stated before no where near as comfortable or quiet as the genesis. The engine on the brz is smooth though. Smoother than i thought it would be. Yes there is the lack of power. But I have driven FRS before so i knew what to expect in that department.

What gets me is just how powerful the genesis feels jumping from one into the other. But at the same time the genesis is far from sharp. But so much more livable and actually usable.

I believe I said it before earlier. If your leaving the BRZ/FRS behind because its hard to live with or doesn't provide enough space then I encourage you to look at the genesis coupe. I think it will defeat all cars it competes with save the g37/q60 which is more luxurious. Though the genesis will outperform the infinity handily. It won't be as upscale. The 2015 mustang as an interior that is comparable with the genesis in both quality and price. And it is because of this I say that is the main car i'd cross shop the genesis against. But only if considering the turbo 4cylinder mustang or v6. The v8 mustang will dominate the genesis in performance. However I would buy another genesis personally before getting a mustang. Not that they are bad cars. I am just interested in something a little more unique.

I'm gonna miss my genesis when I return it in a few months since its a lease. But if ever the sharpness of the handling or the driving experience becomes less important to me or my life situation requires more car or something bigger. I will probably be back in a genesis before I know it. Maybe i'll take em both out and drive em back to back and do a review.

I've driven nearly everything possible you could cross shop with a twin and also have to say for the money and pure driving aspect in a modern car its top of my list. The Fiesta ST (recaro's, nav, decent interior, hatch space, 200hp and a piss ton of torque) also the '15 WRX are very appealing as well but a WRX seems to run no less than 35k where I live - over my budget of 30k.

I'm not at the stage yet I need full blown luxury. With the cars I've lived with - I consider the FRS/BRZ to be S Class/LS400 luxury in comparison.

Power is overrated for me and would put me in a lot of trouble and use more gas than I have the stomach to spend with my current situation. So you romp on it and go fast, big whoop. In every situation while driving in traffic I'm good with just enough oomph to get out of my own way. Everything else is feeling. Flat cornering, nimble foot work, steering, seats, etc.

I briefly had an NA Miata and knowing how slow it was, but also how fun it was, was a very liberating feeling. I didn't have a care in the world that nearly every modern car (except Mitsubishi Mirage LOL) could accelerate faster. I adopted valuable defensive driving habits that I still use today.

I like the Genesis from the side profile, but straight on it looks a bit too chunky.

I went from an FRS to a 2016 STI. The FRS was a fantastic car, but my priorities and interest with a vehicle changed after owning it for about 2.5 years.

If you don't mind modding, and the only thing making you hesitate towards the FRS/BRZ is the power, I would still definitely jump on it. The aftermarket is not short on options at all and a good 50-100whp jump makes this car unbelievably awesome.

If you're concerned about space, road noise/comfort and luxury, I would definitely look elsewhere, as there's only so much you can do, and at the end of the day... It's still just a 25k Subaru.

At one point I wanted a 2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track. Then I drove it and found the steering numb and muted. The weight felt a tiny bit lighter than my 06 G35 S and personally I just love the way it looks vs the way it drives. If Hyundai had somehow made it 300-400 lbs lighter I would be more intrigued.

I test drove the genesis and your right there's no connection on the car, the road and that make me keep driving just one corner then turn back again to the dealership parking. When I test drove the frs manual the RS1 it put smile on my face in an instance and after I drove it back and I sat inside the dealership then haggled up the dealer til I park it on my garage. I will still choose toyota any day than hyundai I valued reliability and performance plus the hight good resale value of my car anyway I'm not planning to change it until it broke and You know toyota are immortals . It also break necks compare to any other car in the road and thats will make you proud, for sure you rarely get compliments even from children to grannies on your previous car than the twins and that adds smile on your face too. Enjoy shopping your new car and don't wait or else you are loosing a good chance of true driving happiness.

Maybe I should have come back and posted in there. I picked up a WRB brz limited at the beginning of march. I have put 12k miles on it since then.

Mods i have done so far is about 400 in sound deadening. New stereo head unit (pioneer car play receiver) shark fin antenna, Damd steering wheel, and all the interior plastics that come in black over seas.

I really am enjoying owning this car and have no regrets about owning it. It is head an shoulders a better driving experience. However the fit and finish in the car leaves a lot to be desired. It has many creaks and rattles even with the sound deadening. I am not trying to bad mouth the car just reporting my honest opinions.

As far as reliability goes I am going to give it to the genesis on this one. They were pretty notorious for having transmission issues but that got fixed from 2013 on. I had both a 12 and a 13. But there are gonna be chronic issues with any car. Hyundai reliability is excellent to say the least and the service department treats me better at any hyundai dealer than any subaru or toyota i have been too yet. Probably why I get the BRZ serviced at hyundai.

In hindsight I would say that I am happy I didn't get the miata. it was just less of what I was personally looking for. and I am glad I let the genesis go to finally get something different after 4 years and two genesis.

However this car while more fun than the genesis is just not quite what I was looking for in my every day car. Its damn close but the fit and finish is significantly inferior to many other cars, especially the genesis. Bare in mind that the genesis bottom level trim is still much nicer than a limited brz, not in the features department but in fit and finish. Touch points and quietness. But it is a GT car. The new ford mustang interior on even the base v6 is of similar quality. And now having sat in a 2016 Miata I can say that the interior on that car appears nicer but the plastics are cheap and flimsy. I would take the Brz with the more dated look over the miata interior on the new car.

closing thoughts:

I encourage anyone who wants to enjoy the sheer pleasure of driving to buy one of these cars. I simply haven't driven anything else that is rewarding in a similar way.

To those that are set on jumping ship however I cannot recommend the genesis enough. It is a fantastic car that is 60-70% as involving as the twins. But still slightly disconnected. But if you don't need a raw experience its a great choice. Though worth waiting a year or so as there is talk of a twin turbo or single turbo v6 as the next power train. Its more than the rumor mill too. It definitely will have a v6 turbo of some kind. But may get more expensive too like g37/q60 money. which I think would be a poor choice for hyundai to encroach on that price point.

my next car will either be another genesis if they can make it more involving or a used c7 or base cayman. till then I'm loving my brz.

It's funny because my 13 Genesis Coupe was a rattle monster and the Hyundai dealer was useless trying to fix them on a brand new car. It was especially bad when the temperatures were below 30 degrees, I had this really loud rattle coming directly behind the speedometer and they could not fix it. It was really bad. The other problem I had with the Genesis coupe from a non-mechanical standpoint, was the seats. I could just never get comfortable in them and the BRZ seats were 100% better.

It's good you found a good Hyundai service department. That can make or break the owning experience as most Hyundai and Kia dealers are notorious for denying and not following-through with warranty claims.

I do agree though on fit and finish/ride quality of a FT86. These cars are just not made of that in mind.

You should check out the new GTI and Golf R. I drove a new GTI and was very impressed with interior fit and finish and features.
