Used this in my Talon.

Cut the extra off and glued stacked strips up the middle to reinforce it. Very strong but extremely light. Worked well as long I didn't get to carried away with what I put on it (Do not try to put a battery on it).

I'm old school, I'd suggest you simply cut a piece of plywood to fit. 3/8" should do it; 1/2" would be sturdier.

Even more old school ..... I'd put the spare tire back in the car ......

By removing the spare tire, for a weight savings, you're messen with the balance of the car ... plus, you still won't be able to beat that mustang ....

I'm not personally one to remove the spare - "better safe" and all that - but this is curious to me. Do they actually design/build cars with a spare in mind?

Completely. When they engineer cars they include all of the standard equipment in the plan. You could have some nasty surprises if they didn't.

I always chuckle when I see guys pulling their spare out at AutoX. Congrats, you've made you car ever so slightly more inclined to understeer!

Really guys? How much does the spare donut tire and wheel weigh? Around 30 pounds. The variability in weight of different drivers is much more than that. Either way, it is probably not worth it to remove it. Maybe if we just go on a diet that would help more!

This.

Most vehicle aesthetics are even designed to incorporate a license plate bracket knowing it will more than likely be required.

I haven't done this but it should work.

buy a can of expanding foam, spray the entire can into a large trash bag, seal it (tightly), chunk it where the spare was and hold down the floor of the trunk where you want it until the foam quits expanding. when the foam hardens it will be formed to the shape of the cavity. I have received motor parts packed in a box that way.

I had two of the original equipment Michelins let go within 30 days... I keep the spare in the trunk. Do you think the extra few pounds matter that much?

That'll add too much weight, no?

Uhm, I speak fluent sarcasm. I was trying to underscore how ridiculous it was to lose the spare to shave a few pounds.
