I don't think the 1st gen tC's were bad at all (being an owner I may be biased).
The 2005 Civic Si was its main competitor and they performed pretty closely with the tC being the less expensive of the two. (the mini-van Civi Si in my and many other's opinion was the worst generation :P) the 2az was and is a pretty solid engine. Not very sporty from the factory, but people with deep pockets have done wonders with them. (anyone with deep enough pockets can do anything) My tC was faster than my BRZ, but it wasn't exactly stock either. The BRZ is still much more fun to drive.

Scion tC is a very boring car to drive compared to the FR-S. So really there isn't much to compare. One is a driver's car and the other is a nice geared up econobox.

No, because the FR-S is based on the LFA chassis. My uncle is in the head office at Toyota Japan and he told me that the LFA was a limited production prototype run for the twins. Toyota wanted to make sure that the twins chassis was going to be absolutely flawless before they put it into production.

Glad they don't jack up the price so much on the new release series.
